Forums - Gaming Discussion - Is Sony Taking Advantage of Canada Because of Their Lead?

It's only in part due to the value of the canadian $. The Canadian $ value was way worse before 2006 and games was 59.99$
I bought my copy of Fable in september 2004 with a canadian dollar value of ~0.77 and it was 59.99$. games have always been $ 59.99 since I buy video games. (N64 area) with few exceptions. So yes sony is taking advantage of their lead. http://www.x-rates.com/average/?from=CAD&to=USD&amount=1.00&year=2004

Edit: But it has more to do with a company that can't afford to lose a single $ than the company's will to take advantage of the situation. IMO.

Yes thats exactly whats going on.  That is business though.  See companies lower the price of a product if its stuck on the shelf and raise its price when its flying off the shelf.  Thats what every single business (big or small), (decent or greedy) does.

Ok guys.....those who are saying its the Canadian $.

You are correct, but MS isn't doing it. MS ironically this time around has more integrity in smaller markets like Canada. Brazil comes to mind as well.

In that bundle is a digital game which means no packaging fees, and a Kinect. For $50 more you get a weaker console but a camera with it, along with Titanfall (PS4 owners get the free games from PS+, but that's another story). The value is really up to you, for me the PS4 is still a superior deal since I don't use Kinect, and due to the current exchange rates you aren't paying much more than the people in the US.

A $60 AAA game digital or not. Kinect is and does much more then a camera. PS + isn't even part of this discussion. Your preferences are up to you, but the X1 does have considerably more bang for buck in Canada over PS4.

No big deal. It is a small market and doesn't impact your bragging rights, right?

This isn't about my bragging rights, I don't like the X1, but in no ways am I a fanboy. I've owned the 360 as well as the original. To play Titanfall you need Xbox Live, right? So that's $60 on top of that. If you add PS+ to the PS4 (and it's fair since Xbox Live had to be added to the X1) that's an extra $50. So right now it's-

X1- $560 for Titanfall, Kinect, and Live and console

PS4- $500 for PS+, included PS+ games, and (more powerful) console

But you'll probably point out that PS4 still isn't a good value cause no Kinect (even though it's more powerful and that most people don't even want Kinect). In that case, we'll add the PS Eye as well. Now it's-

X1- $560 for Titanfall, Kinect, Live, and console

PS4- $560 for PS+, included PS+ games, PS Eye, and (more powerful) console

You may cry foul and say the much more advanced Kinect is worth more than the eye, to which I would counter with the more powerful base console makes that value a wash. Now, if you really like Kinect and/or Titanfall, the better value is X1. If not, it's PS4.

Ok easy with the "power". Slightly more powerful in that it has more 1080p/60 fps. However if you see Ryse you would know that X1 is no slouch in the graphics department. That is completely subjective in this. Same goes for PS+ as that is a feature seperate from the console itself, it has no part in this discussion.

I am talking bang for buck. X1 gives you a game and the kinect hardware, for all that it does. Whether that is up someones alley is another story.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

A game that you can't play without Live.

Also, the PS4 is more powerful, end of story. Multi-plat games look better on it, which gives it the edge in power, no matter how incremental it be.

Okay I can fill in this one.... what is happening is that the Canadian Dollar is now not on par with the United States dollar. Some companies have added 5 Dollars. Sony has added 10 dollars. Some time next year, all games should be $10 higher, like the start of generation of the last generation.

The Price of Infamous Second Son in Canada should be be 66.41 CAD compared to the 59.99 USD. However 69.99 is what the rounded up price is, and 64.99 is the rounded down price.

All companies will do this in the long run, unless some companies decide to establish Canadian Specific price strategy.

Since when is console pricing about currency conversion rates?

If that would be the case a $400 dollar PS4 would not cost 400€ in europe  but 291€  and even if you add 20% on top of the US price (VAT which you dont even have to pay in every US state)  It would be $400 in the US vs $480 in europe....and $480 = 349€ not 400€

$549 is what europeans have to pay for a PS4 (its even more expensive than the X1 costs in the US rofl)

FYI: The X1 price of 500€ would translate to $686.

Its just Sony going "you want to have fair prices because $ =/= € ? keep dreaming fools!" and then  "Please understand that we have to change the canadian price because the canadian dollar lost value."

its arbitrary pricing and pro-company behavior instead of pro-consumer. They apply double standards. if the canadian dollar would increase in value again we will see a very delayed "price correction"  in favor of Sony OR no price correction at all

This. Canada is somewhat socialistic meaning they try to keep everyone somewhat equal in terms of quality of life. Problem being that some people are more motivated and have a larger drive to be successful than most lazy f**ks. The government has to use social programs to help the needy and lazy. Sometimes they print off money to help those in need rather than raising taxes on the hard workers. If you have a $100 economy and print off $10 to bring the economy to $110... If a man had $10 before they printed money, his $10 is essentially worth $9 now. Get it? Don't blame Sony. Blame your government. Free market is the way to go. If you have dreams, chase the mofos without worrying about high taxes. If you want to be a lazy ass. Good for you. It all comes down to who wants it more. This is what has always made America so great.

they are doing it to recoup the loses they make for each console sold in the us ...

well losing $50-$100 each console sold in the us well no problem, just make a $50-$100 profit for each console sold in the eu ...
make the consumers we care happy and our wallets fat ... no real loss made.

edit:
and also europeans don't care if they have to pay $100 more for a product, they will still buy it.

A japanese product made in China  gets import taxes  everywhere except the US?
