Forums - Nintendo - Donkey Kong Tropical freeze..better than SM3DW???

I understand reviewers have deadlines and they have to rush and they have to be able to spot flaws that some people may have issue with but this game is fantastic. My platfprming skills were pretty rusty as evidenced by a recent attempt to play Ms. Splosion Man. Now, I feel like I did back in 1994. The game is awesome and the more you play, the more you love it. Totally unexpected.

Hell, I may buy Rayman now.

I have played it now and co-op still sucks. It's fun and challenging in single player, it's pure frustration in co-op. I like to play together with my 4 year old, but he burns through lives. So he basically has to sit out until I get a new balloon, barrel or 100 bananas to join again for a bit. Plus in co-op you only have half the health and abilities as in single player, 1 mistake on my side and game over. 2 long loading screens to start again from the beginning.
Terrible design 5/10. Not even half the game 3D world is for co-op, or Rayman, or NSMBU. Even Knack has better co-op.

I think I found your problem.

Have you tried buying items from Funky's shop?

He spend all the coins on useless crap already :)

Anyway I found a solution albeit a tedious one. You can harvest about 15+ lives in the first level, plus you can copy the save game for re-use. Save up, backup the save game, play together without going crazy. It would have been nice not having to resort to grinding in a 2D platformer in 2014 to have some simple fun. Lives is a concept that has run its time. At least the game is fun to replay, that's a bonus.

Having reached the end of the 6th island, I'll say YES, it is better than 3D World, though only by a hair as they are both fantastic.

The more organic feel to Tropical Freeze's levels give it the edge.

In my video review, I praise what the game does right, but personally...

No, I don't think it's better than SM3DW, lol

I have a question can you use regular controls for this game or do you have to use the Wii mote or touch screen? The gimmicky pointless Wiimote controls ruined the last game for me. I would prefer to play this one with a regular controller.

Sorry if this has already been answered (I've only read 2 pages)

Yeah mate, you can just use the controller pro's if you want to.

You can use the Gamepad, play on tv or on the gamepad (single player only, no touchscreen use). Choice of 4 configurations for the buttons.
Play with wiimote alone, or wiimote + nunchuck, but both of those involve shaking for rumble action.
Or play with the pro controller.

It gets a bit confusing with the multi button prompts in multiplayer :)

Despite the need to shake, wiimote + nunchuck is still my favorite. Not having to hold your hands together all the time is nice. More split controllers please.

I truly suck at Donkey Kong games so maybe that influences my opinion, but I do give Tropical Freeze the compliment of better graphics and in some cases better music.
