Sure they can release a SKU that's backwards compatible but this would go against PS NOW pretty much.

why cant they just do a system update or something , they obviously make money with online subsciptions

full PS3 backwards compatibility means having pretty much all of the PS3 parts on board, which would cost a lot more than $100

full PS3 backwards compatibility means having pretty much all of the PS3 parts on board, which would cost a lot more than $100

they already have the bluray and the HDD, also they may be able to use the RAM and GPU, the cell is really the thing they can't substitute.

And to everyone who is talking about PS Now: That is not for everyone, just like a always online console.

Not everyone has fast enough internet.

My initial idea was building the PS4 with an expansion port and selling a PS3 BC cartridge as an accessory
