This is so far from the truth. If only to revamp the audio and use non-vomit inducing sprites.

Updating Final Fantasy VII to have more modern 3D character models and environments seems like an expensive venture, simply because they can't upscale the game's archaic, 3D assets in a way that they can with a seventh generation game like Final Fantasy X. Additionally, recreating modernized assets for FF VII is probably more costly than replacing 2D sprites and background art for many of the 2D FF remakes.
Furthermore, let's say that Square-Enix decides to upgrade the visuals closer to Advent Children, would they still leave the game voiceless (which would probably come at odds with the improved visuals), or would they add voice work? If the latter, than SE would have to rewrite the script, because the original lines simply would not work in a modern, voiced game, which is a whole undertaking as well.
Beyond all this is the likely event that some of the very same fans asking for a remake will be displeased with what Square-Enix changes to the game. If SE doesn't change visuals enough, fans will call the remake "half-assed", but change the visuals too much and then "they've destroyed what made the original so great". Would all of the quirky aspects of Final Fantasy VII remain in the remake, like the whole Don Corneo portion?
In my opinion, the original game is fine as it is (I just replayed the game last year when it released on Steam), so I would prefer that SE saved itself the trouble of having to worry about the eventual crying of how they ruined Final Fantasy VII, and instead, spend their resources on getting more than one single-player main entry (i.e., XV and XVI) out this console generation.

We are still talking about the SNES/PS1 version, aren't we?

You're talking about the GBA version?

Nope. My FF VI is the SNES/PS1 one, though there are patches to "fix" the GBA one, which kupomogli linked me to. The GBA one is naturally a bit meh without them.

So what? Dont several other series get rebooted aswell? Didnt resident Evil get remade in the Gamecube?
God were acting like FF7 is incredible costly to develop compared to all these juggernauts we have on the market. FF7 has something very important: garanteed sales. Its what people want. I still say that aslong as they dont mess the music up too much, dont deviate the storyline dramatically from what it was and keep the combat system, it will have been worthwhile.
The classic game wont disappear if they remake FF7. The original will still be there for everyones enjoyment. What a sucessful remake of FF7 would do is open the door for more of the better FF's to be remade in the same way ( imagine 6, 8 and 9) instead of having this plethora of FFXIII turds. Yeah i would rather squeenix remaking games that i know are good and theres a smaller chance they can mess them up then completely new turds no one wants to play. It counts as time better spent to me. It will also make them more money than running the FF brand through the mud like they did this gen.

I was talking about the PS1 version and my statement definitely still stands.

The audio quality is bad and the spirtes look bad. Thus, it could use a remake to get it looking and sounding better.
