What about the PS2 having a DVD player? This was HUGE back then.

It also had a very high attach rate for games.

Very high, over 10.

Over 1.65 Billion games sold for the PlayStation 2 at retail. To put this into perspective, thats almost as much software as the PS3 and 360 combined.

The loss of casuals I think will make publishers more risk-averse and give us more less-than-stellar games.

When you have a series like Just Dance that is low-cost to develop and rakes in millions -- it gives companies like Ubisoft the working capital to take risks that help pioneer innovative games.

The casual market isnt lost for the big publishers just yet. Were not gonna get Wii levels again but the PS4, Xbox One and Wii U instalbase will be big enough to support certain games and genres. The likes of Just Dance and Skylanders will be around for some time yet, they just wont sell as well on Gen 8 until the consoles start to hit mass market pricepoints. With Wii, that mass market pricepoint was there from Day 1.

On top of that, publishers will continue to make money from mobile and f2p. Look at Square Enix for the best example of this.
