Lets face it. We are not going to see 260 million + console sales between the XB1/PS4 and WiiU. That is where were stand right now for the 7th gen consoles. To be honest I would be THRILLED if this gen can generate 180 mil in 8 years.

My point is we should not compare this gen to last, but to gen 6. The Wii did some amazing things for console sales but I dont see it happening this gen. I see 25 mil for Wii U, 60 Mil for XB1 and 110 mil for PS4 this gen. Which in historical terms would be great sales but compared to last gen overall a fairure with only Sony seeing an improvement.

The PS4 will not dominate like the PS2 did. Wanna know why? Well for starters GTA, FF, KH , and MGS series were all exclusve to the PS2. There is no way that many 3rd party games are exclusive this gen. I mean seriously GTA used to be EXCLUSIVE. Image how huge it would have been if GTA was a PS4 exclusive. That happened in gen 6.

I agree, I used to do the graphics argument against ps2 fans back in the 6th Gen just because I heard the xbox was supposed to be stronger. My anti playstation days started there.

My jaw dropped, I never seen anything like that........well no one did. I bought 2 ps2's just for GTA titles. That was a powerful exclusive, no that was the most powerful exclusive ever. I don't want to project what the numbers will be for every individual console as the current trend can easily change as it has in the past but I don't think we will have that collective sales number despite the record breaking fast start by both MS and sony.

If smartphones didn't exist, we would've seen a growth.

Will steam boxes be counted as this gens sales ? will amazons console if it for real.

PS4 is already do dominating like PS2, you all might want to learn the difference between what the actual sales were and going by comparing LT sales.

GTA PS4 will double the X1 version sales in NA. In Europe ill be 4/1, just wait and see.

I think you're right, unfortunately. The PS4 might "win" the generation, but it doesn't mean its rising tide will lift all ships.

All the more reason for us to continue to invest in video games, on home consoles and handhelds, so that the industry (at least the good parts of it) continues to grow.

I think the PS4 can still dominate like the PS2. If the X1 keeps bombing hard, many publishers won't even bother with bringing games for it. That will generate 3rd party exclusives, helping PlayStation to dominate. If the X1 only sells like 20 mio units, ports may not be worth it because most games will struggle to sell a million copies on that system.

Thats because most the people who bought the wii wont be coming back. They are probably playing flappy bird as we speak.

I blame the Wii for opening the pandora box of causal gamers who would not return and I blame Nintendo for not attracting them back to home consoles.

So it's really Nintendo's fault for not making a true successor to the Wii because we all knew Sony and Microsoft were less likely to do so.

Last gen doesn't count, Wii artificially inflates the numbers due to the 80-90 million non gamer install base.

Yeah, this is pretty obvious when you take into account just how different the Wii userbase was in comparison to anything else the industry has seen. Those gamers arent coming back and this generation is looking more like a return to normality.

I think lifetime if were judging solely on PS4, Xbox One and Wii U we can expect something similar to the PS2 generation - 200 to 225 Million lifetime.

100-120 Million for PS4
40-60 Million for Xbox One
20-30 Million for Wii U

I think as things currently are in the industry, those are fair early predictions.
