Imagine if Nintendo made their own Steam network and made sure they sold games that could be run on computers that most people could afford or are currently using.

They can also sell retail games bundled with their own game controller to use with the PCs which would be less expensive than selling an entire home console. In fact, they can even make the games work with x-box controllers and make a deal with Microsoft to be their traditional gamecontroller developers.

The problem arises with 4 player games, but is it really that hard to find a decent size monitor and move your PCs (which are smaller now) or laptop (since they want games to run on most of the PCs in the market) to your living room and plug a HDMI cable to your TV? There's probably going to be ways to stream your PC monitor to your TV in the future anyway

They would be like classic Blizzard before Wolrd of Warcaft selling classic WarCraft, Diablo, and Starcraft games that had good enough graphics and ran on most PCs in the 90s.

What do you guys think? Should Nintendo do this if they unlikely decide to leave the home console market?

edit: Damn it I forgot about Piracy and Steam sales that make Nintendo's always 60$ games uncompetitive. Oh well.

no, not really the keyboard and mouse would be to intimidating for your average nintendo gamer, remember how complex controllers were why so many people feared gaming and why they made the nunchuck controller so simplistic?

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

LOL, nintendo has this anti PC sentiment. Everything about their game development is sooo non standard compared to PC. They also seem to dislike taking advantage of phenomenons from PC such as Call of duty or minecraft. (Those started out as PC titles but became successful on HD twins.)

Japanese developers in general are bad at PC development if you looked at many PC ports from Japanese developers such as Dark Souls which was broken up the ass at launch... So that + the fact that Nintendo has had zero experience with PC before will probably mean its a bad idea... If Japanese developers that have made games for PC before is having a hard time making games for PC, Nintendo would get wrecked

Also lets not forget that Nintendo loves making games for specialized hardware which is PC is not... Making games for 1000s of different hardware configs from a developer that only makes games for specialized hardware seems impossible

it could work, but still for the market they are aiming for it's better to be in the familly room infront of a big screen instead of a close space with little room to have people playing with you. all their advertisement is always a familly of four or something playing together next to each other, when was the alst time you played with your familly on the same pc ;)

There has never been a game but there  are time where people do crowd around a PC like watching a youtube video, Netflix, Hulu, or video chat with a relative that is far away. If the software is enticing enough, they can get people to crowd around the PC.

But I'm also banking on future TVs or devices that lets you stream your PC monitor to TV within three years. Also, if the games can work on laptop, then people can just plug it into their hdmi and buy four controllers like one would do for any home console game.

If Nintendo focused only on PC development then they wouldn't have to worry about treating a PC port as a second sku unit for their software like some developers do.

I'd love it if they put some of their older games for sale on PC. They could expand their brands while making lots of money at the same time. I'd love a retro Mario game collection on Steam.

PC has bigger piracy rate compared to other platforms. Plus steam users like cheaper deals. Are you serious?
