Forums - Nintendo - Pachter Predicts 3 Million Global 2014 Sales for Wii U

I was reading this over at GoNintendo, and I had to laugh at the comments. All but one person thinks it will sell way more than that. The lone calm voice pointed out 'I dunno... to hit 3 million, it would have to sell 250k a month, something it to date has not done.'

Other people are saying 'I bet it'll sell SEVEN million.'

Now, I own a Wii U, and have since launch. But I seriously doubt it will sell 250k a month. I think there's a chance that in the month Mario Kart is released (May) and whenever Smash launches, there will be sales spikes. But I do not think they will be prolonged. I think more people will get Smash on 3DS than Wii U (duh) and I think it will really cut into the sales people are expecting to see.

Nintendo has put out Wii Sports sequels, Wii Fit iterations, 2D Mario, Zelda remaster, 3D Mario, and had no gigantic bump. All it has left are Kart, Smash, and full, new Zelda in its batch of system sellers. I expect some results from the launch of these, but not many.

You have to remember that sales get a considerable push towards the christmas season.

3mil sounds like a sensible (though conservative) prediction.  If it does better it will depend on the momentum that is created. If they chain well the releases of MArio Kart, Smash and X, they could get some traction going.

Itll have a healthier year in 2014 than it did in 2013. It may not be some explosion in sales but im fairly certain itll do more than 3m this year. Nintendo games are holiday games btw, so even if it doesnt have monster sales the week of MK release or Smash Bros release it will prolong a healthier life for WiiU as the legs will have gotten stronger since Nintendo games themselves have strong legs.

4-5m is my guess though. Then again i said 7m last year and we all know how that ended, so it wouldnt be doubtful for me being wrong again.

it sold 3m last year...

and patcher is an idiot, so 6m wii u 2014 confirment...

I just got a WiiU a week or so ago. Like myself, there may be a number of people whose Wii died or they are just bored with it. They like the Nintendo brand and will start to migrate to the U. With such a large install base on the Wii, that could translate to millions over the next year or two.

It is near the end of the end....

Sounds like a good prediction!

"I've Underestimated the Horse Power from Mario Kart 8, I'll Never Doubt the WiiU's Engine Again"

I don't think Smash 3DS will release at the same time as the Wii U version, which will greatly effect the number of units sold on each console. Taking a wait and see attitude towards Wii U sales this year, a lot depends on the holiday push (and pricing and software and bundles at that time.)

4.2 million for the year

I think he's lowballing it, I would say probably 4.25-5 million for the full year (which will be the peak year for the Wii U IMO, it will sink back down in 2015 and get downright ugly in 2016).

It will sell more than 3mil but less than 7mil
