Well, according to MS's own estimates, there were 900K units on shelves at the end of 2013.  It's obvious they shipped as much as they could, and stores took them because of good early sales, but sales dropped dramatically near the end of the year.  It's good to have enough consoles on the shelves for people to buy, but that is way too many to have in supply at this point in the game.  This quarter they will have no problem getting to the ~1.5M in supply the consoles usually have.

Well it will be very interesting to see what effect PS4 will have in Japan. Home console ownership has declined in comparison to handhelds. If PS4 is able to gain stronger traction in Japan than the PS3 will be interesting.

I'm not sure about the rest of Asia, but the X1 will not be as successful as PS4 in Japan. In Europe it looks to be a strong opening for PS4. US might be about even.

So I would not say its an end game scenario for Microsoft. They have done some great work for the online community with the Xbox console, so as long as they push that I think they will have a good chance of being successful, just not as successful as Sony worldwide.

I wouldn't call it desperation, I'd definitely call it a publicity stunt though. I doubt very many people are going to be going out of there way to track down the nearest Microsoft store in there area. It may be convenient for some, but the vast, vast majority of gamer's have a Gamestop that's closer.

IMO MS can't make a price cut because they invest too much on the new kinect! If they release a kinectless bundle they will have a big loss and Third party developers will not invest on kinect gameplay for their games.(which is another big loss for MS)
