The old 2D Sonics had just as many problems as a lot of the newer ones; when you were going fast, it was more a movie than a game, and when you weren't the platforming was twitchy. Don't get me wrong, they were fun, but they weren't any better than Colours or Generations, and I don't see anything about Boom that suggests it's guaranteed to be inferior.

I think this is overestated as an argument but its actually far from the case.

Even in the high speed sections of Sonic 2, you still have control of your character and time to react. You dont on 3D Sonic, and if you did you were likely to fall on a bottomless pit. Its hardly the same.If you were good and had good reflexes Sonic 2D was perfect (The mega drive games and Sonic Advance 1).

On a different note though, this makes me hopeful:

"Sonic Team is great and they make really great speed-oriented games, but this game is not just about speed. Speed is an important aspect of it, but exploration, combat and the strong narrative of the storyline are very big aspects of the game, more so than I would say in the past. So again, we wanted a strong storyline and art design that Western audiences can resonate a little bit better with the synergistic relation for all of us at Sega of America is why we drove toward a Western developer across the board."

This is the direction Sonic needs to go back to. This game better be good. I dont want another failure game like Sonic 06 giving them the bad idea that this isnt the right direction for Sonic. Lets just redesign that Kuckles though...

The Megadrive games still moved too fast and gave too little fair warning, making responding in time trial and error.

I have to agree with Curl-6 on this. I think that people don't really recall this aspect of the game because of the time period of release. Older games featured a lot more trial and error gameplay. Trial and error gameplay is looked down upon in modern game design.

I agree...

...Which is why the Sonic Adventure games are the best, end of story.

Some would argue, that the Mega Drive Sonic games required practice to learn the optimal routes through the stages and so it is a combination of memory and skill to get the best times :P

I would argue that they are wrong. SA 4tw!

RIP Dad 25/11/51 - 13/12/13. You will be missed but never forgotten.

Sorry Smeags, I should have asked permission before I posted a pic of you and your girlfriend cosplaying

After watching the Gameexplain about the trailer and finding it has been in development since 2012, my bet is that the game will be released just before the show airs approximately the time they start advertising it.
