I think this is overestated as an argument but its actually far from the case.
Even in the high speed sections of Sonic 2, you still have control of your character and time to react. You dont on 3D Sonic, and if you did you were likely to fall on a bottomless pit. Its hardly the same.If you were good and had good reflexes Sonic 2D was perfect (The mega drive games and Sonic Advance 1).

The Megadrive games still moved too fast and gave too little fair warning, making responding in time trial and error.
