Forums - Gaming - Would the 360 have been as popular if the PS3 launch wasn't so screwed up?

Would 360 be just as successful if Sony didn't screw up PS3's launch?

Yup, the 360 was one fly ... 14 21.21%

Nah, 360 only looked good... 52 78.79%

The PS2 had MGS2, Kingdom Hearts I/II, Final Fantasy X/XII, Dragon Quest XI, Devil May Cry, Grand Theft III/GTA: San Andreas, Ridge Racer as franchise exclusives.

Regardless of head start or not ... the XBox stripped that exclusivity all the way down to just one series -- Metal Gear Solid. And even there they got Metal Gear Rising in time.

Sony was always going to suffer a decline in sales to the XBox without having such an overwhelming advantage in 3rd party exclusives.

Microsoft successfully destroyed Sony's hold on several key franchises in the industry -- and no a great launch and all the Uncharted games in the world wouldn't change that fact, the PS3 gen was always going to be more comptetive for Sony.

Much the Xbox 360's success is thanks to Sony for dropping the ball.

This time Sony is benefiting from MS releasing an expensive machine. But MS can easily match the price of PS4 is they so desire.

Heres my alternate reality scenario

PS3 uses DVD instead of Bluray and something more cost efficient/developer friendly than the Cell processor.

360 delayed to prevent Red Ring of Death incident and Kinect never released (instead available at Xbox One launch)

Both release Holiday 2006 at $399 with equal power and same HDD space. In this scenario I believe PS3 would have dominated, instead of if being 50/50 in terms of sales I think it would be more like 70/30 in PS3 favor.

Also in this scenario I believe the generation would have been much shorter since 360 didnt have Kinect and PS3 didnt have such a huge price to come down from so they each would have peaked earlier. Probably PS4/One would have released holiday 2011.

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

I think so. Give a Sony console a reasonable price tag and make devs say nice things about it and you have the PS4, which seems to be killing it right now. I think all things being equal, people prefer Sony hardware. The 360 did have better exclusives for a long time though IMO. Gears and Halo were truly great games.

Well, we could also ask how 360 would have been without a so screwed up launch... RROD was all over the media back then, giving 360 a very bad reputation.
