Forums - Gaming - "Console Quality" In Relation to Handheld Games

Handhelds use to focus on pick up an play games. Games that don't require much of an investment time wise. Console games, on the other hand, required a person to sit down, get comfortable and dedicate large portions of time playing a game.

That's what "console quality" means.

Console quality means that the graffix and gameplay mechanics/scale are comparable to what games from the past two generations are putting out. It doesn't have anything to do with how good a game is. That's how I see it, anyway.

Using the PSP as an example, I would consider Daxter "console quality," whereas LocoRoco is " handheld quality."

I can somewhat follow this logic, but the terms "console quality" and "handheld quality" don't strike me as apt descriptors. When I call a game a "quality" video game, I'm referring to how good it is on an all-encompassing level. It boggles my mind to think that the whole meaning of the term can change because "console" or "handheld" are added in front of it.

Yes, I do care about semantics. I don't like arguments in which the points being made are unclear to begin with.

console = AAA game
handheld= Indie

It's just a catch phrase, really. I don't really care much about advertising speak. I don't understand why people get caught up in it, either, where they get mad at what commercials and PR personnel say.

I didn't know companies used that in advertisements or PR. Hm!

Anyhow, your last paragraph kind of answers the question. Many people still view handheld games as sub-par. Which is certainly not the case, anymore.

Really? I've marathoned handheld games for 10+ hours before. Just because handheld games are structured to accomendate a pick up and play mentailty, doesn't mean that I'm forced to conform to that mentality. There's also no rule that says I can't play a home console game in 15-30 minutes sessions, and considering how different genres are structured, it's completely possible for the majority of console games.

I agree that it's a strange term - it implies that handhelds should be striving for some sort of "quality" existent on home consoles, when it really should be the other way around.

Revelations and Castelvania on 3DS are living proof of console quality games

But my question is: "What is the meaning of console quality?"

It's not enough to point at examples and say "that". I want to know what sets them apart from the rest, and why the term "console quality" even makes any sense when describing said difference.

That's what it comes across as. If "console quality" is not supposed to imply such a thing, then I think the term needs to be amended or erased from our lexicon.

Well, notice how I said "use to"? lol. Times have certainly changed and you can find more engrossing handheld experiences these days than the GBA days etc. But some things still remain such as what you said. Alot of handheld games ALLOW for quick sessions where as most big console games don't. Game like Infamous, Zelda or Halo can't really be played for 5 min because everything you did will be lost between saves.
