So NAT-1 is not NAT at all ;) Or do you mean DMZ? And even this is not NAT...

NAT-2 is no issue?! By default all ports are blocked on a NAT-Router from WAN-side, so no translation from outside to inside ports (intended ports, that is). This should be the default config (unless it also does UPnP...).

NAT-3? This is the default - of course ports are blocked by default, one has to manually configure them, if the service tells you which you should open.

If your router blocks any port used by PS3 then it is NAT-3.

The default is NAT-2 if you have uPnP enabled in your router... it will open the port and close after the use.

NAT-1 is when there is no router... just the moden cable direct connect to the PS3 for example... if there is a router it is NAT-2 (no issue) or NAT-3 (issue).

NAT-3 is hard to happen... only if your router didn't works with uPnP... so you will need to open the port manually until get NAT-2.

It is really only a status in how your connection with internet is being done.

Nat type 1 open
nat 2 slightly restricted, online game suffer in this type.
nat 3 fully restricted online games wont work well or at all.

NAT-2 is open too... just that are using a router.

From PS3 documentation.

Check how the PS3™ system is connected to the Internet. This information can be used to judge the ease or difficulty of connecting to other PS3™ systems when using voice / video chat or the communication features of games.

Type 1: Connected directly to the Internet

Type 2: Connected to the Internet via a router

Type 3: Connected to the Internet via a router

With type 3, it may not be possible to communicate with other PS3™ systems, and voice / video chat and the communication features of games may be restricted. In this case, see [Connecting to PSNSM] in this guide.

http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/settings/connecttest.html

NAT-3 is when you are using a router but it is restricted... there is issues with ports blocked for example.

NAT-1 and NAT-2 are fine... works everything fine.

Router + uPnP = NAT-2 (it is the best config unless your router is really bad at routing traffic... any moderm router works fine even the cheapest).

Again NAT-1 is *not* NAT at all ;)

But ok, I get the idea. Have to say that UPnP is of course the worst thing one could imagine on a router... Everything that speaks UPnP can open and manipulate ports on the router and therefore kill any "security" NAT inherently has.

Default should always be NAT-3, in my opinion. You can turn this easily to "NAT-2" by opening the ports manually which is always the best idea.

Yeap... security and all but I love uPnP... after it I never needed to config router anymore... my brother stopped to ask me how to do the things in the router to works the games.

I really don't care that much with security... I don't have anything confidencial on PC or something like... there are family pictures but not anything xxx too and all pics are published in some public photo site... so I guess that's not my issue.

uPnP works... that's what I need

Nat 1 or open nat is the best for playing games online. They run the best. At least thats my experience.

Don't say security if you mean privacy ;) I get your idea but really, UPnP *is* an inherent backdoor and people should really be warned about it.

All depends of your router... some old routers have issue with NAT and the packages got some overhead with it but more advanced routers makes NAT free working like a direct connection.

What? Which overhead?! And of course NAT-1 or no NAT is the best for playing online... But also the worst in terms of privacy and security. But obviously this is no preference here on this forum ;)

I mean the router ms to route the packages, to check the firewall rules, to translate the NAT, etc... this is all overhead added over a direct connection to internet.

Old routers had weak processor and memory that really delayed the reponse in terms of ms... even the ping get worse because that.

New routers uses better and more memory... so a good router you will never have trouble with these "processing" made by it internally... it is almost free performance for it so the response get the mininum overhead possible.
