I mean the router ms to route the packages, to check the firewall rules, to translate the NAT, etc... this is all overhead added over a direct connection to internet.
Old routers had weak processor and memory that really delayed the reponse in terms of ms... even the ping get worse because that.
New routers uses better and more memory... so a good router you will never have trouble with these "processing" made by it internally... it is almost free performance for it so the response get the mininum overhead possible.
