Forums - Nintendo - Can anyone tell me what I am missing about the 3DS

I have no interest in the 3DS but I am getting a Wii U soon. Can someone explain to me why I should want a 3DS?  This may seem to be a troll thread but I seriously am curious. Do your best to sell me either a 2DS, 3DS, or 3DS XL, your choice.

The fact that you guys helped convince me to get a Wii U made me curious to if you all could make me want a 3DS as well (this will be much harder than the Wii U)

Mfw this is a troll thread admonishing the DS/3DS and highlighting the Vita/Smartphone which were not mentioned in the OP.

I like having a 3DS... but I honestly barely use it.

The 3DS just doesn't cater to my personal taste, but I do enjoy playing Nintendo games in small doses. I'm going to buy Smash Bros.

The Vita appeals to me more, but library of interesting exclusives is too small.

Honestly if I didn't travel A LOT, I would say my Vita, and any handheld gaming device; was also a waste.  If you have a console or PC, then that is usually more fun to play at home.  Also, any ok laptop (Intel HD 4000 and up) is better for when you are on the go.

I mean think about it.  Do you know what is better than the 3DS/Vita line up?  The entire catalog of PC games.  If you have any laptop made in the past 2 years you are good to run anything up to Skyrim/Fallout 3 at playable settings.

AND if you are just bored for a couple minutes, pull out a smart phone and google something or go on Cracked.com.  Seriously dedicated handheld gaming is pretty much pointless.

Agreed, I'd much rather game on a laptop. However, handheld consoles still have advantages. Vita and 3DS are easier to carry around, are relatively cheap, and they have software not available on other platforms.

I've used and will continue to use my 3DS just enough to not consider it a waste. But I'm certainly disappointed by the software as a whole. Its seems to be for people that really enjoy JRPGs or 1st party platformers.

Yep, that's me with the Vita.  I fly all the time so the Vita gets a lot of use there, but if I didn't travel a lot I don't think I would reccomend it to someone...

Have you guys ever thought that maybe OP already looked at all of the games? Do you have qualms with the HW, maybe?

Also, ktay has the prettiest post ever. So many colors!

You are pretty much the only one that gets it. Thank you

Why would I want to pay 40$ (Full retail price for a mobile game) what I can get on a smart phone for way less? Atleast the PSVita has reasonably priced Indies and the PSVita's full retail games are comparable the PS3/360 games.

This is exactly why your ways of looking at things is completly wrong. ALBW is 5times the game that is Killzone on the vita imo. Sure you don't have to take my words or any reviewers words for it. You can judge with screenshots and youtube videos but that would be a terrible and foolish mistake. I have a friend like you who did'nt want anything to do with the 3DS, he had the same mentality, judging 3DS games as inferior just because of screenshots he saw. Now he completed Mario and Luigi's Dream Team, said it was one of his favorite RPG ever and is now playing hours of MK7 and planning on buying a bunch of other games.

Your mentality is like someone seeing a trailer of the Lion King or Toy Story (two of the best movies ever imo) and say that they are garbage when you can watch movies with great realistic CGI like Transformers or Avengers... Everyone who saw the Lion King or Toy Story knows how stupid this way of thinking is but they will never convince you. They can try to show you as many arguments, trailers or scenes from these movies but you will never get it till you leave aside you presumptions and watch these movies with a open mind.

Same goes when you compare anime shows like Death Note or w/v anime you like to watch and dismissing it as kid crap cause it's ''cartoons''.

If you are the kind of guy who made his oppinion by looking at screenshots, I'm afraid that nothing anyone here will be able to say will ever convince you. That rigid way of thinking will cause you to miss out on alot of things, if comparing screenshots can wrongly reassure you that you made thw right choice of picking up a Vita over a 3DS despite what the world around you is saying, well good for you and keep on comparing screenshots and you will remain convinced and happy since someone who does'nt know how wrong he is can't be unhappy about it.

Someone who will never want to watch the Godfather, The Thing or the first Starwars trilogi because it's too old and old is crap in his oppinion can't be unhappy for not watching it. If he is convinced that today's UltraHD/3D CGI movies are the pinnacle of cinema it won't make him unhappy thinking that way. That's good for him I guess but moviegooers won't help it but to feel sorry for him neverless.

Beautiful. OP simply is a troll guised as an avid shopper. He'd rather purchase a DS for probably 60 off Craigslist as opposed to getting a 3DS with 2 games for around 100-120 which plays two generations of systems.

Okay, you should put that in your OP. That you've seen the games.

The HW isn't the best, I'll say that. Especially with the original 3DS. However, the 3DS XL is built much better and is way more comfortable to play. The first one was small and had pretty pointed edges. The OS has also gotten much better with time.

I must be the only person who like the 3DS more than the XL. too bad I use my XL instead because I cant go without those screens

You're not alone. I personally find the XL to be kinda ugly (though hardware-wise it's an improvement).

The reason to get the 3ds is the same reason you get any game machine: games! It's got some of the funniest games around, in all genres, and lots of them. I've put in so many hours into my 3ds, it's ridiculous. If you give the handheld a real chance, and try some of its best games, you will be hooked.

Mii too.

I only like the anti-aliasing on the XL which works even better then the original, when the 3D is on, on both.

I always play with the 3D on, so the screen of the original is big enough on games from the past year, as far back as November 2012.
