Forums - Gaming - No Nintendo Super Bowl commercial?

It is not worth it to advertise during the Super Bowl. Too expensive. Sony didn't advertise either. Microsoft had an awful commercial for no particular product.

Super Bowl commercials are overrated.

There's 110 million people watching, and no other type of program comes near to matching its ratings. The second most watched event on TV after the SB in the US is The Oscars with 40 million viewers. There's a reason why the SB is so expensive for ad spots.

And?  You don't think I know that already?

It is a complete waste of money.  The ads that don't make the Super Bowl get just as much attention for free.

The only Nintendo related media I saw was a mention of Nate Irving admitting he plays Pokemon to the WSJ.  But at least the home team won for Nintendo of America.

Too soon for them to unveil the "non-wearables" like the Nintendo "U Walk Cane",  the "Bullet Bill Blood Pressure Monitor", and the new DS unfortunately named "3DSTDS".

Sony had Amazing Spiderman 2. And Microsoft's commercial highlighted Technology in general.

Nintendo's biggest problem since the N64 is the fact that they don't market enough. 4 million bucks to run a Super Bowl add featuring the Wii U and Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze is nothing. That's the same as 13,300 Wii U consoles or 80,000k copies of Donkey Kong. With 100 - 120 million viewers that isn't jack squat especially when it is the one time of year when people make a point to actually watch the commercials.

A funny CGI commercial where Diddy and DK are throwing a banana like a football, hit Cranky in the head, and then Cranky proceeds to smack the crap out of Diddy and DK with his cane would have been a hit, especially with how lame the commercials were this year. Nintendo needs to stop being cheap and market their products. Nintendo is worth 12 - 13 billion dollars and markets like they are some small 3rd party developer.

A Superbowl commercial if you can make a really funny might've actually been worth it for Nintendo because it probably would've been replayed a lot over the next week.

But that's a big if. If you could hire a Kate Upton or Megan Fox maybe playing opposite a guy in Donkey Kong suit and then get something funny out of it, it would probably be more effective than all their marketing in the US to date. $4 million is not a bad amount to spend if they could pull it off.

But Nintendo is too Japanese centric, they wouldn't understand these things.

Waste of Money?   4 million dollars to get an add spot where over 100 million people WANT to watch commericals is a bargain.   Thats less then 4 cents per viewer, not to mention all of the people that now go on youtube and watch the commerical again expecially if it is a hit.   They could have just shown off Mario Kart for 30 seconds and tons of people would have went "I love Mario Kart, that new version looks AMAZING."

Yeah it's not just the commercial, if you happen to make a funny spot or have one with a famous celebrity ... then odds are it's going to get a ton of views on Youtube and perhaps even be featured on things like Good Morning America and CNN the day afterwards.

But with a celebrity you're probably looking at $1-$2 million extra for a 30-second spot. Still worth it.

Isn't that why they have Reggie though.      It blows my mind that game companies don't advertise during the Super Bowl.   Spiderman 2 had a trailer and the 1st one brought in 262 million, which means this one will probebly bring in a little less at about 230 - 240 million.     5 million copies of Mario Kart 8 at $60 would bring in $300 million dollars.      It really makes no sense to me that companies don't use the Super Bowl to debut new products.  Could you imagine Nintendo showing Metroid Prime 4 for the 1st time during the Super Bowl.    With all of the FPS fans in the U.S., gamers would go nuts for it.   Seriously I wish I could run marketing at Nintendo, they have so many great products and are just terrible at marketing.  Call of Duty is basically just one big marketing campaign now.

Mario and Donkey Kong are the celebrities.   Everyone already knows who they are.  This is the problem with Nintendo now, they are still great at making games, they just have no clue how to market their product.    They went back to "Gotta Catch em All" for Pokemon X/Y and it did huge numbers in the U.S.   I just don't understand how a 12 billion dollar company has almost no marketing. If they would actually advertise well, they could be worth twice as much, and pretty much own the game market.
