Might as well write an article called "why surround sound, HDMI cables, proper D-Pads and Analog Triggers shouldn't matter to gamers". No one should dictate what should and shouldn't matter to consumers. No one should tell consumers what they should and what they shouldn't talk about. No one should allow companies to claim parity when one product is clearly better or worse than the other from a purely technical standpoint.
You don't see car enthusiasts saying "well engines and horsepower don't matter, its all about the driving. You should all stop talking abut engines and horsepower OK". Granted driving is the main goal but other factors make it better, or worse.
If someone cares about having twice the amount pixels on the screen then by all means let them care. It may not change the game into something else but resolution, graphics and frame-rate greatly affect the "atmosphere" and "feel"which is pretty damn important.
Bioshock at medium, 30fps and 1280 x 720 may be the same game as Bioshock at ultra, 1920 x 1080 and 60fps but trust me one game has much better atmosphere and gameplay experience than the other. Granted the gap of the consoles in question isn't that large but the same principle same applies. 30FPS vs 60FPS. 1080p vs 900p vs 720p.
I recently finished Mass Effect 3 on my WiiU (720p30fps) which I really enjoyed. I was so high on Mass Effect 3s ending that I decided to play through Mass Effect 2 one more time on my PC (1080p60fps). All it took was a few seconds of the games opening sequence for me to notice that even though I had beaten it once before it felt and looked so much better on PC. So much better, I was really struck by it. "How can 2 look and feel so much better than 3? So... smooth" I said to myself. I guess I had forgotten what the 1080p60 sensation felt like. I ordered the PC version of Mass Effect 3 minutes later so that I can replay the game "the way it was meant to be played" so to speak.
Maybe that makes me a resolution and framerate whore. I don't care, all I know that it felt so much better in 1080p60 than in 720p30. Enough for me to buy the same damn game on a different platform. All I know is that Digital Foundrys face offs aren't click-bait but a genuine way of helping the consumer get the most value for money, which must be a bad thing apparently.
If you own one system it shouldn't really matter I guess. But for those who own multiple systems or trying to purchase one its pretty darn helpful to know what to expect upfront.
