Forums - Gaming - Did Epic play Microsoft

honestly i think it was a good deal for both companies. epic can be done with it because honestly i don't see them making anything with gears that will sell and Microsoft just secured their ip from competition which can be used/rebooted later down the road.

I agree. I think it was a good deal especialy if it was around that $100 mil range.

unless its gta any sports title or something else that you can keep going, then its not worth it i mean how long can you keep the gears of war franchise up? look at a few great franchises from the late 90s where are they now?

as a PS fan im a bit bumped that the future and past gears aint gonna come to ps4 but honesty i would of re bought them remastered and also feel that the franchise ran its coarse, its a new gen im looking forward to the future not the present or past i want new franchises and new gameplay mechanics

Now Epic can use all that money to build a new engine from which dozens of generic games will be built for years to come.

Does anyone know how much Microsoft paid for the IP?

I heard around $100 million which i think cheap.

A 100 million? No way, that IP generated hundreds of millions.

If MS got it that cheap they'll make a profit in no time.

Epic is better off now focusing on new projects. Black tusk is now forced to take over someones elses creation, cannot see them being happy about that.

They were given an extremely successful IP and they can go anywhere with it. That's a great opportunity and job security if they don't screw it up.

Game development is a rought industry, just go ask the people at defunct Sony studios.

From what I believe, Epic were probably thinking about releasing the trilogy on all platforms in HD once there contract was up with MS. MS heard about that and then made moves to secure the rights. Its also possible that they stirred it up to increase the cost of the franchise. Either way Xbox wont be losing out because Gears is a fan favourite on Xbox and it will surely bring in the cash. Its also a good system seller.

Even after the contract ended, I presume MS was op top of the Gears IP.

IGN did an interview with Phil Spencer a few months back, it sounded like MS was still involved with Gears IP and kicking around ideas where to go with it.

I,ve never had the pleasure of playing the last gears game but from what i hear it kinda ends the series. How do u start back up? Prequel?

The Gears trilogy is just a story. They can make new stories in that world. They could potentially make games about the wars going on before E-Day. Or they could go into more detail about E-Day.

I just need an excuse to play more Gears.

It depends on how much MS paid. But I imagine this scenario has no losers. Epic got money, MS got a permanent IP, and they only spent the spare change in their couch cushions to pay or it lol
