Forums - Nintendo - Project cars Wii U, 3rd party done right??

Thank you, Andy Tudor.

I hope this guy can share his keen abilities with the WiiU with other developers.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

If Wii U user base grows to a decent size, it should get some well deserved sales. Mario Kart shouldn't compete directly with it, as it's purely arcade, while Project CARS should be a "simcade" closer to a sim than to an arcade racer (basically it should offer some optional driving simplifications on top of a quite faithful simulation, this option is often offered also in the beginner modes of even purer sims *), and with users contributions possibly enhancing its sim aspects more than arcade ones. So the problem won't be Mario's competition, but if it will have enough users that like not only arcade racers, but also more or less faithful racing sims.

* For example, even the very unforgiving GPL offers some beginner modes, with lower engine power, shorter races and damage disabled.

You mean a version of a (presumably) good game in a good genre, using the hardware to its fullest, with all features included, released, announced and promoted at the same time and way as the other versions is 3rd party done right on a Nintendo platform?

Yes, I think that might be 3rd party done right. If only COD, Batman and others could get the same respect.

And yet it was still unforgiving . It was a challenge even with the lower engine power because there was no downforce on the game (as it should be). I remember my father, a huge, huge, hugeee GP2 fan/racer, which won a lot of GP2 competitions being completely frustrated in the first months with GPL .

OT - Project CARS has the potential to be a very competent sim on the Wii U. The problem is, does the console have a large enough sim-enthusiast base to attract sales to the Wii U. Personally, while having a Wii U myself and loving the system a lot, I'm getting Project Cars on PC, unless there's some very distinguishing features on the Wii U version that justify it's purchase.

Current PC Build

CPU - i7 8700K 3.7 GHz (4.7 GHz turbo) 6 cores OC'd to 5.2 GHz with Watercooling (Hydro Series H110i) | MB - Gigabyte Z370 HD3P ATX | Gigabyte GTX 1080ti Gaming OC BLACK 11G (1657 MHz Boost Core / 11010 MHz Memory) | RAM - Corsair DIMM 32GB DDR4, 2400 MHz | PSU - Corsair CX650M (80+ Bronze) 650W | Audio - Asus Essence STX II 7.1 | Monitor - Samsung U28E590D 4K UHD, Freesync, 1 ms, 60 Hz, 28"

wiiu version will not have any precision acceleration or braking due to digital controls that is unless you map them to one of the sticks

Injustice came out on the PS4 7 months after the simultaneous 360/PS3/WiiU release. Ps4 version has sold 170k in just 2 months, while the WiiU version has sold 80k in 9 months

The PS4 had just launched, new owners are hungry for games.

Now you're just coming up with excuses. By your logic Most Wanted U didn't sell due to it coming out months after it's initial release on 360/PS3, so Injustice should'nt have sold on the PS4 due to it being available on other consoles for months. Wii U has a bigger install base than PS4/X1, yet 3rd party games sell higher on PS4/X1, not just "hardcore" games like ACIV or COD, but family games like LEGO Marvel, too. Just Dance and Sylanders are selling higher on the WiiU than PS4/X1, but not by much.

Attach rates are always inflated in the first two months or so fater launch.

So then why didn't Darksiders 2 and Tekken Tag Tournament 2 sell well? Nothing is wrong with those WiiU versions and are actually superior to their PS3/360 counterpart due to Darksiders having the DLC on the disc and Tekken having mushroom mode & Nintendo character skins. Darksiders should've sold well on the WiiU, cause that's where the Zelda audience is at, and Darksiders is basically a Zelda game, but with different characters and a better combat. Nintendo also released a non-broken version of Ninja Gaiden 3 and it still didn't sell well. The attach rates should've been high like you said, yet those games didn't sell

My question to you is why do you care so much about how much it will sell or not on the Wii U?

To prove that the assumption of 3rd party games selling poorly on the Wii U due to being

  • late
  • "lazy"
  • expensive or poor value

are completely false.

I predict that the Wii U will sell a total of 18 million units in its lifetime.

The NX will be a 900p machine

Wow @ your dad!
About GPL: the only car with which I manage to get some results is the Brabham, although right now the biggest problem for me to start again playing it is overcoming some incompatibilities, I hope they were mostly due to XP not getting along well with my HW and that Win 7 solve at least part of them, making crashes less frequent.

About the user base it looks like we agree on the main obstacle the Wii U version will have to overcome. Also, while, having tried it on my smartphone, I prefer tilt detection to sticks for wheel simulation, for a true sim fan nothing can beat a true wheel, with pedals too, so Wii U's gamepad could be a bigger selling point for non hardcore sim fans, but for the most dedicated ones it will be a bonus feature only if the devs find a way to make it a worthy complement to true wheel and pedals, and this in turn could be implemented if the audience is predicted to be large enough to justify the additional dev cost. It looks like a vicious and not virtuous circle. But hey, maybe those that want more than just arcade drivers, but are not enough into racing sims to buy a wheel, could find the Wii U tablet quite comfortable and precise, it could also be a case in which being quite large, and closer to a small sports wheel size, could be an advantage for it.

Well, actually that is the only acceptable control layout to play a racing sim (or a simcade closer to sim than to arcade) without proper wheel and pedals. And the steering should be mapped to tilt motion control, as a small stick wouldn't allow a control fine enough. I know there is a minority of hardcore sim racers that prefer full-sized high-quality joysticks  to true wheels, but it's a minority, for me even a full-sized decent joystick is enough just for arcade racers (or simcade closer to arcade than sim), and even in them precise control can be hard in the hardest races.

But still, what's the big deal with rather or not third parties sell on Nintendo consoles? Who cares? Just play whatever games you like.
