Forums - Gaming - what's so great about mobile gaming?

They are very addictive cause all you have to do is pick up your phone to play whenever

Cheap and accessible are two big reasons for appeal. There are some good games that pop up and some genres that do work better.

During the goty season last month, i saw quite a few mobile games getting attention. Now, they might not be too deep but it is step in the right direction. Also every game doesn't have to be deep.

I agree that every game doesn't have to be deep, but when the vast majority of them are just casual puzzle games, then that just doesn't do it for me. Then there's things I've been reading on this sitefor awhile. Things like mobile gaming is hurting the handheld market, it'll be the cause of another home console gaming crash, companies can't compete,so there's switching to mobile games full time, etc, etc. Those are things I find interesting and make wonder about the state of the gaming market as a whole.

Generally because they're cheap, most people have something to play them with on them at most times of the day and though you may not see the appeal (and to be honest neither do I) some people don't mind them being simple distractions for a few minutes at a time, that's all they want, especially if you're busy doing things, something like Candy Crush is the ultimate in pick up and play so you can squeeze a bit in during short breaks etc.

Besides the simple games with inventive gameplay to get you stuck with them like PacMan Tetris and Space invaders did.. (Cut the Rope, Angry Birds Ridicilous fishing)

It also gives a new life to forgotten genres like point and click adventures (Telltales the Walking Dead wouldn't be as big without the iPad), strategy games (Touchscreen is great for these games, Plaque Inc) Movie Games (Where are they on consoles?) Card games, Pinball Games etc..

The main reason for me is because it reminds me why I play games.. to have fun and enjoy the experience..

I actually think that there is a group of gamers and developers out there who lost what gaming is about and only care about the same sequels with prettier graphics.. thats not core or hardcore but close minded and sad cause they are missing out on fun experiences..

It's great at the bathroom. If you have a waterproof smartphone, even better.

Similar to junk food.

Shit quality but so cheap you don't care.

That's a great/clever comparison.

They are very simple and highly addictive. When I start up Zoo Keeper, I just can't..... stop...... playing...

It's like the glorious days of the NES all over again. The games are jsut pick up and play. No boring story, no endless cutscenes. You get right into the game, without any delay at all. Modern AAA games on the other hand are getting on your nerves with gazillions of boring logos before you even get to the menu. Then you go through some pointless tutorial and blah. Quite often, you find yourself spending an entire hour for a game and you haven't even really started! Not a problem for the hardcore gamer but annoying as hell for people who just started playing. Seriously, if gaming had been that complicated and time consuming in the 80s, I don't know if I had become a gamer back then.

I respectfully disagree with your opinion. I love those things about modern gaming. I started gaming back in the late 80's and games were complicated and time consuming for different reasons. Most of them were harder to play and you did'nt have all the save and checkpoints that you do now. You only had a certain amount of continues and lives. You could save some with long passwords, but it all depended on the game. You did'nt have access to the interent are some guide to hold your hand. You pretty much had to figure out for your self for the most part. I love the fact that's gamings gotten deeper and more immersive, just like movies.

What's so great about console games? Most of them are crappy shovelware and movie tie-ins. I also think that thumbstick controls just suck. The slow-turning aim assist completely breaks the immersion. Nobody moves like that and it feels like the game is playing itself.

Parody aside, touchscreens are great for anything turn-based, puzzle-adventures or arcade games. But perhaps the key feature is responsiveness. I can (and do) load and play a level or two of a mobile game while I wait for the PS3 to boot up > load game > load save. Great for those unskippable cutscenes, too.

Everything about console games is slow and ponderous. I don't even bother starting them up unless I know I can spend an hour on them. Mobile games are fast, responsive, and can handle whatever time I have to spare. If I only have enough time for two rounds of Sid Meier's Ace Patrol before something interrupts me, that's no problem, because the game will effortlessly suspend and autosave so no progress is lost.
