The free grinding in awakening was a bit annoying, the game lost all the difficulty it had in previous installments. Awakening was just too easy as a Fire Emblem, I liked how Radiant Dawn was so hard, it alway made me play carefully. Awakening is a great RPG, but an average Fire Emblem.

No difficulty settings in that game? Unless you are talking about the hardest difficulty. I am new to this franchise and it is good to hear it is easier than previous entries. Will definitely check it out now.

It may be a difficult game, but after playing so many Fire Emblem games, I thought it was much easier than previous entries, and you can change the difficulty settings.

Ahh i see. Just curious. What difficulty were you playing at? Was it the hardest one with that perma-death on?

Radiant Dawn was weird in the pacing department. Micaiah's chapters were pretty challenging then you get Ike's team who are way overpowered relatively, then at the end, you get a couple unkillable characters to help you beat the game. I didn't quite get why it was designed that way

To make sense in the story department. Micaiah's team is the oppressed group that starts a revolution to put an end to the reign of terror of Begnion's forces. Ike's team is the same that won the preceding war; turning that group into weaklings would have been pretty strange. Towards the end everyone joins forces and that includes the kings of the nations of the Laguz; and those peoples traditionally make their strongest individuals the kings, so they have to feel overpowered compared to all the other Laguz characters.

All that might have led to some uneven pacing, but at least it didn't break the suspension of disbelief.

When you put it that way, it makes a lot of sense. It does defeat the SRPG elements though when you can power through the end with OP characters whcih defeats the whole idea of not allowing grinding. I do think it would have probably been best to maybe stick to Micaiah's team throughout (while maybe telling the story of Ike's team in the background) because it did seem somewhat pointless to have built her team so much only to discard the vast majority of them towards the end.

"Dr. Tenma, according to you, lives are equal. That's why I live today. But you must have realised it by now...the only thing people are equal in is death"---Johann Liebert (MONSTER)

"WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

All I can ask for is that they improve the dialogue. Awakening felt like it was written by a kid writing up some Anime fanfiction.

It's only really the final in the tower where you can power through, because the preceding chapters in Part IV are quite open and challenging with all their reinforcements. But yeah, I am not too fond of the final either, because you have to select ten units in addition to the predetermined ones while everyone else gets left behind. You aren't forced to use the royal Laguz, but it's tempting to pick them.

The developers wanted to tell a story from different points of view, so the concession they had to make was that you have to discard a lot of the units you built up. Whether those are Micaiah's, Ike's or Geoffrey's, you have to leave a lot of them behind in the end. Focusing on only one group throughout the entire game wouldn't have led to such an impactful culmination of the events.

I have OCD when it comes to RPGs in general so I must use the most optimized team. I always take the Royal Laguz without fail and my favorite character, Elincia, doesn't even make the cut sadly. Yeah, overall, I like what they did with the game. I only wish there were sidequests and more content to pad it up like other SRPGs because when you're done with the story, there isn't much else. If only there was a way to keep things challenging while still adding side content...

This is the only nintendo series I like having played Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn on my brother's wii. My question would be: when is the next home console fire emblem? It seems that the series is historically more successful on handhelds so I'm not holding my breath. I wonder if that's a side effect of the handhelds just being more successful in general or the fans truly preferring handheld.

Historical sales for Fire Emblem are really hard to gauge, since the franchise's first five entries, all on consoles, never made it outside of Japan. Of the 7 console Fire Emblems, only 2 have made overseas, while 4 of the 6 handheld entries have made it. FE3 and FE4 are currently the best-selling entries in Japan, both on consoles.

But I would agree with your thinking, mostly due to how handheld-centric Japan is nowadays, and that FE is still a very Japanese-oriented franchise. I personally would put my bets on the next mainline game (excluding the SMT/FE crossover, which I'm super excited for) being on the 3DS and placed in Awakening's universe once again. With one exception, the games have always come in sets placed in the same universe. Whether it will be a prequel to Awakening, like FE7 was to FE6, or a direct sequel, like FE3 and FE10 were to FE1 and FE9 respectively, we'll have to wait and see.

Regarding your last comment, I don't have an exact idea how the Japanese fanbase thinks, but outside of Japan the Ike/Tellius games have a pretty strong following. Those two are actually my personal favorites in the franchise, so I'm also rooting for another mainline console entry. I think the notion that the franchise is better suited to handhelds is bogus. Awakening did a great job making the game easy to pick up and play in short spurts, but that's more the exception than the rule in the series. I don't recall any other FE title where my average play session would be under an hour.

On a side note, there was fun rumor on Serenesforest (online FE database/FC) a while back about Paris/Prium being included in Awakening as a hint that the next mainline title would return to the Tellius/Ike universe. *sighs* If only...

Yeah, I like the IKe story myself in the 2 games I've played. I'm not really a fan of handhelds though. If they keep releasing more for the 3DS, I guess I might cave in at some point if I have nothing else to play. IMO, SRPGs are better on consoles. They are typically long and complex games. I don't get why the genre has basically been relegated to handhelds these days. It may be the Japan preference again.

The franchises are also relatively low on production values, and handhelds hide that better.

Though the beorc leaders were all overpowered too, albeit most of them were magic users. Elincia wasn't great physically, though Amiti made her quite useful in combat and her mobility was great on a healer.

Having played the available fire emblems in the U.S. and loving them, especially awakening, its going to be really hard to top the last entry. SMT x Fire emblem may be able to pull it off, but I'm not sure. Not to say they wont be good, but how do you top awakening?

Sorry but they need to make a Advanced Wars 3ds game. I loved Awakening, absolutely stunning game. But I need AW! With online clan battles!
