I disagree. I doubt these things will make much money. The PS4 is certainly doing very well for them though.
All the real money is in smartphones, and after the Xperia Z, Sony hasn't released any big popular phone. Even the Xperia Z's sales had fallen after Samsung and HTC released their own flagship smartphones.

I think they on the right track with the Xperia Z...its definitely done wonders for the brand. Before the Z Sony didnt really have a smartphone that competed well against the flagship phones from Samsung, Apple, HTC, and LG.

Read any article or watch any youtube video about the best smartphones of 2013 or top 10 smartphones etc. and you will see that the Z is right up there in most of them. Thats a massive difference compared to 2 years ago.

You are right. This has been a very good achievement by Hirai.

The Xperia Z was quite succesful for Sony and the waterproof gimick made the phone very succesful.

I actually cant tell if you are being sarcastic or not :/

Waterproof has nothing to do with it..it is one of the best phones of the market.

No the waterproof thing was its main selling point. Before that Sony were still releasing high end phones that nobody was buying even though they were just as good as the top Samsung Galaxy and Iphones. The Xperia Z's waterproof and dust proof feature really made it stand out.

Yep Waterproof was a pretty major selling point along with the "Best of Sony in Smartphone" tagline which supposedly meant good camera, good visuals, good sound, good design.

Before the Z though, Sony's previous high end phones were never really taken seriously because they always released products well after the likes of Samsung and HTC released their flagship devices. And not only did they release them late they also released them with average to subpar hardware. This was at a time when everybody was interested in bigger numbers ie. more cores, more memory, more pixels, more resolution etc.

The Z was one of Sony's first devices that had really good hardware on all fronts.

Good start, and things are looking better, but sony needs to figure out how to fix its remaining money losing divisions.

This. I love to see more sales for sony, but until they get out of the red there'll be problems

At least they're still generating profit.

haha, oops, I didn't mean to sound sarcastic, I was being serious. The Xperia Z proved that Sony can still make great phones and the water proof feature was very innovative since Samsung, HTC, and even Huwavei hadn't thought of it yet. Now Sony will need to be innovative again for their next flagship smartphone.

I have to agree with MoH. One of the main features that the xperia has over other smartphones and likely one that has contributed hugely to its sales is its waterproof feature. As someone who works outdoors a lot of the time, that is one of the reasons i got a water resistant xperia (albeit not the most recent Z models).

Everything from a hardware standpoint is just as it has always been. Sony makes the best products in the world. However, they are starting to finally catch up, and in ways, surpass the competition in OS, and networking. This is what makes things so exiting. Finally, we may see the best hardware, coupled with the best user experience and software.

Now the big thing going forward is marketing. Sony has to garner interest in these products, and get them in peoples hands. Hopefully, they can achieve this, and become the market leader they should be. I want another era of innovation, and the end of market leaders that gouge the consumer (this is also why I have big hopes for Steam success). This year will be very telling, and PS Now, and the Cloud TV service will be make or break, exciting times.

Stop hate, let others live the life they were given. Everyone has their problems, and no one should have to feel ashamed for the way they were born. Be proud of who you are, encourage others to be proud of themselves. Learn, research, absorb everything around you. Nothing is meaningless, a purpose is placed on everything no matter how you perceive it. Discover how to love, and share that love with everything that you encounter. Help make existence a beautiful thing.

So essentially you want Sony to die.

Yes, S.T.A.G.E., that is exactly what he said. ¬_¬

The conclusions you jump to at times. Even if MoH is well known to try and diminish anthing Sony compared to how he talks about the other players in the industry, this isn't remotely what he expressed here.
