Masturbation is never specifically declared a sin in the Bible. 'Sexual Immorality of all kinds' is to be abstained from by Christians - but to say that Masturbation is therefore a sin is begging the question.
Lust is always a sin.
So if you're masturbating without lusting you should be fine.

/edit: I forgot! If you're a Catholic, Church tradition and not just Biblical interpretation is the key to understanding a moral issue. Church teaching has always been that Masturbation is sinful. Therefore, as a Catholic, masturbation is a sin, regardless of what you think the Bible has to say about it. That's just the way that it is. Furthermore, as a Catholic, masturbation is a Mortal sin - meaning that you must participate in a proper confession in order to have this sin absolved. Mortal sins such as masturbation cannot be purged in purgatory - if you die in a state of Mortal sin you are destined for eternal damnation.

Even so, the bible says allot of things that *really* should not be taken literally anyway.
For example, being put to death for wearing different kinds of fabrics together, or stoning your children to death for being unruly.
The bible was written in another time for another people for a different culture and translated/interpreted to suit, it doesn't apply literally to us today, society has become more civil since then.
Although personally I don't beleive in religion the bible itself has some pretty sound messages.
Masturbation however is perfectly natural and healthy thus even if the bible was against it, I wouldn't personally follow it anyway.

if the design was for every sperm to be sacred. There are a few things I believe would have been done differently.
Every ejaculation would bring forth 1 sperm. if each sperm was treated as a life on par with that of a human, thousands die even on a successful fertilization. So it can't be that serious.
Every husband and wife would be expected to have a child every time they have sex. as not to waste the sperm.
eggs would be just as sacred so nuns would be frowned upon for wasting their life supply without turning everyone into babies.
The wet dream phenomenon would not exist. I't like masturbation without having any control over it.
SO overall I don't count it as a sin.
Also,Idon'tsee why the christian comunity thinks marige should be arequirment tohavesex in God's favor.Marigeas we know it today, didnot exist in thedays of the Bible.Marige today is a finacial agreement contract for the most part.

I see purity as making a healthy moral decision knowing the possible outcomes. Not simply the ability to withhold oneself from engadging in life, which I see many people doing and using religion as an excuse.
Personally, I find the notion 'of saving yourself for marriage' as morally repugant and a terrible thing some force on others. People should be adults and know themselves before they get married. Part of being an adult and knowing if you are mature enough to marry is learning about your body and sex. Plus there should be compatibily with your chosen spouse.

I don't believe it's a sin, but I believe it can be an unhealthy habit.
