It doesn't work like that.  Sony also has a big pile of debts. They are a publicly traded company.  Anyone could offer a decent enough amound and buy them from the shareholders.  Offer 21 Billion and you might just walk away with it.

Just like if you had an extra 350 Billion sitting around could probably buy Mirosoft.

Or enough in either case to have controlling interest.

Time Warner didn't really want to be bought by that 'tiny' internet company AOL.  Sears, after over 100 years as a huge company, didn't really want to be bought out by Kmart.

Aggresive takeover in Japan is different than in USA.

There are approximately 1 billions of shares of Sony SNE stock on the New York Stock exchange.  One buys enough stock, one controls the company.

Currnetly Sony has the same value that it had in 1974.  Down 972% from it's high.

Hey, not trying to argue.  I agree Japan would try to stop a takeover, but sometimes things are out of one's control.

Unless buy the shares in NY secretly through multiple different places (probably partially illegal) the price would skyrocket if a big volum is bought... And I'm not even sure if most of the shares in NY are voting ones.

Unless Microsoft wanted to start producing movies, releasing music albums, making T.V. shows, and become a dedicated electronics manufacturer - it makes no sense. What would MS gain from buying Sony aside from a monopoly in the console market? They're already much more profitable than sony by just being a software company - why change your entire corporation and risk going into debt?

Plus Sony isn't a tiny small business. It is one of the largest corporations on Earth.

Sony actually has a current valuation of less than Nintendo's.  Even with all it's manufacturing and insurance companies it's rounding at the low 17 Billion, while Nintendo is 18 Billion.

Rather amzing isn't it?

Sony isn't going to accept 17 billion dollars dor their entire company. Sony owns a lot of assets and would make a hell of a lot more money selling them off individually.

There is a lot more to it then this, ms would have to pay way more then just sony's value, and then there are the logistical nightmare og buying a global conglomerate of sonys size, then there is japan. In other words, not going to happen.

Microsoft will not try as it is too risky (changes that Sony goes bankrupt at some point are real), also anti-trust laws will just prevent it from happening anyway (at least for the gaming division).

It's a great idea in theory but all the passionate Sony fans over the world would never allow Sony to be sold to some other company. Death threats would be plenty. Nobody dares to even propose the idea of a takeover.

Sony is a phenomenon unlike enything else. I don't think anything else has so many passionate and dedicated fans, nonetheless(*) a public company.

* I had meant another word here but as I foreigner it doesn't come naturally to me.

They make way too much money with Sony, so easily no.

They are all voting stock.

Non-voting stock is required to hold a different call sign.

Assuming someone wanted to conduct a hostile takeover... it might actually be easier then  your average company.

Nobody owns 10% of stock in the company, and only the biggest shareholder owns over 5%... and a lot of the biggest owners are various trust accounts... which have reduced holdings lately.

I'll put it this way... Dan Loeb is actually the 5th biggest stock holder.

If somone was willing to offer 25-35 billion, chances are the trust accounts would be forced to vote for a takeover just to avoid being accused of malpractice.

That said... hostile takeovers rarely if ever happen anymore, and there is little reason for anyone to want to take over Sony.

Besides, Microsoft has a lot of deals with sony as it is... including a rumored windows phone.

COULD microsoft hostilly take over Sony?    Yea sure.

There is no reason to do so though... taking over sony would probably end up hurting Microsofts bottom line rather then helping it once you sort out all the redundencies.... and Microsoft could use that money better to buy half a dozen promising startups/newly establishsed companies who don't have stock yet on the market.

That's really where the majority of company aquistions have moved too.

Oh man, looks like Sony is worth 24.07 billion now. But I think we can all agree it doesn't work like that if you want to take over an other company

Would never happen. And I would just go Wii U and PC I don't dislike Xbox I'm just not a fan of the way Microsoft does things. If anyone should be buying anything, Amazon should buy the xbox division, I would definitely buy a slim xbox one.

Sony is a black hole of debt. If Microsoft had any intentions of buying them, they would wait for Sony to pay most of its debt.

You know it deserves the GOTY.
