No, he compared Steam accounts, which anyone can make up in a heartbeat to a videogames console that costs 500 bucks.

butt-hurt?? how?
it's newell who's making a comparison between two things that should not be compared.
the guy is comparing a $500 machine versus an account practically anyone can make for free...
I think newell is the one who is feeling threatened.

No. He mentioned the number of active accounts. Not the total number of accounts created.

It took Steam many years to reach that 65 million and Valve has never said that that number is for active Steam users, that's just their total number of users, many of those accounts might have been used very rarely, such as my own, or abandoned entirely. Xbox Live on the other hand has 48 million active users and the 360 has sold over 80 million, more than the total number of lifetime Steam accounts. |
Yes they have. The number is for users that have purchased something and signed in within the past thirty days.
Why the hell would he compare a new console with an old network? Did he try to piss off MS? Yeah... he did such a great job.... He should stick to eating burgers or whatever he likes doing..

Ok....two things.
He is using the total userbase of steam compared to 2 months of Xbox 1 sales. I am pretty sure Xbox 360 is more successful then Steam due to having a higher instal base.
Those 65 million Steam users have a PC that runs on Windows.....ya I am sure MS is super pissed about this :P

Do you have a source for that? Everything I found just said the total userbase hit 65 million, not the active userbase. Regardless, Xbox Live with 48 million users is doing quite well. My points stands, it's dickish of Gabe to downplay Microsoft's achievement in order to hype Steam, even Sony congratulated Microsoft when the Xbox One passed 2 million (they might have congratulated them yesterday on passing 3 million, I didn't check). |
There are plenty that specify active users.

I'll see if I can find where I saw Valve's definition of an active user again.
If you actually watched the video you would see he said it as a joke, so many people here getting their panties in a bunch. I can't believe people are taking this so serious...

Putting this here for all of those who don't take the time to inform themselves before throwings rocks.
Watch it in full and you'll see that he doesn't exacly come off as making a jab at MS.
