Final Fantasy IX is great. VI is just better. VII was cool because it was 3D. X pretty much on IX level, just miss a character as good as Vivi was.

I actually think FFVI has enjoyed a bit of a renaissance among the press and public in recent years, to a point that it might be the plurality pick as best FF over VII. In the readers' choice poll on IGN in 2008, for example, VI beat VII by 15 spots. Conversely, however, in a GAME poll of the same year, VII placed well ahead of VI.

In 2013, Kotaku ranked VI as the top FF game, with VII coming in fourth. Similarly, in 2009, IGN ranked VI number one, just one spot ahead of VII. One year later, in 2010, GamesRadar listed VI in the premiere spot, with VII placing third.

I'm not saying VI is the consensus pick for best Final Fantasy -- scores of fans and publications still rank VII first -- but I sense that it has ever so slightly passed VII to win a plurality of the vote.

Both are great games in my opinion, and deserve to be ranked among the best ever made.

IV is the best, storyline is simply superb on that one as well as gameplay. V and VI are very close, though. Every SNES FF is a masterpiece on its own right.

The first FF1 and the SNES sequels added to almost every core gameplay element Square has used for quite sometime.  FF's on the PS1 were stale imho, but the 3D graphics wowed legions of mainstream gamers who never played the NES/SNES titles and created a new rabid fanbase. FFXIII was a breath of fresh air imho, any game developer can play it safe like in FF9 and rely on the tried and true formula, but they didn't for FFXIII they mixed it up the most and put a huge amount of creativity into it which I liked. Internet reviews are rigged anyways.

FF Tactics to me felt like playing FF5 and Shining Force if they had a baby, it was a hybrid of the two games and it bored me dearly honestly. Some people love that game and I doubt they played FF5/SF before it. So I get that games popularity in that most SNES owners back in the day hated Sega so they wouldn't have played the SF series and FF5 never saw a US release until late into the PS1's life cycle, after FFT was out.
