Oh.. and FFX, not even a contender. Boring is the name of the game. |
Well for me FFVII was boring and I hate it when there's to much mini-games. I could not stand the 3d artstyle of the characters (a bunch of cubes stuck together) back then and I still can't today. I prefered the artstyle of sprites characters of the first final fantasy games.

Also this
Final Fantasy VI does come close, but honestly, it still doesn't compare

I agree with virtually everything but your ultimate conclusion. While both games are excellent, both are flawed to the point of distraction at some points, and in very different ways. Both have their strengths and weaknesses, so I think which one is "better" comes down more to personal preference than an objective measure of quality.
I believe in honesty, civility, generosity, practicality, and impartiality.

Thank you. And you certainly couldn't have chosen a better person to explain this to.
FF7 has absolutely no replay value though, the greatest JRPG should have a shred of replay value don't you guys think?
FF7 does have ultra cheesy mini games I'll give it that.
For instance in FF1 you can create a customizable party with different strengths and weaknesses. All Mages all fighters or simply a combination of Mages and Fighters Theifs Black Belts ect. That simple concept/aspect creates a game you will play and complete at least 2x if not more. FFVII and FFIV lock you in, in a lot of ways to customizing your party, and they both have no replay value because of it. FFVI had far more customization once you got to the point where the antagonist destroys the world, and you regroup on Setzers airship.
In FFXIII there is more interesting/engaging/bold and balanced cast of characters than 7, the talent on character voice acting is also amazing for a JRPG. FFXIII for me also has a more interesting skill development process, you don't just get materia or espers and cram them on everyone, and play musical chairs with them until everyone gets what you want. (Which is a super boring way to level btw as well) They all learn basically the same skills, where's the individualty after that point when all your characters have the exact same summons (FF7 or everyone has the Ultima spell (FF6)? That is broken gameplay mechanics imho! The amount of weapons to customize/ then hunt trapz end game and craft/create the Ultimate weapons (8 per character) to your personal play style postgame/end game is very fun. Then you can mix any character with your choosing of all your other party members to create your favorite play style/party you are free, they do not lock you into certain characters for the final chapters of the game like most FF games have done time and time again. It also has the most fast paced battle system for a FF. It's not over tedious like the Summons in FF7, you even have the option to press select button on the PS3 controller a few seconds in to summoning an Eidolon to skip over the cutscene unlike FF7 in which you have to watch the same 1 summon hundreds of times, so boring/lame. FFXIII also has the most action oriented pace/adrenaline engaging battle system for a FF imho as well, better animation than FF7 also. The 240i graphics of FFVII VS. FFXIII's 1080p is no contest either. FFXIII took me 2x as long to complete than FFVII and was far more engaging in the story/battle system/character development areas, there was an end game. Which all proves that FFVII is yes, the more shallow title in this long running series. That is my opinion backed up with well laid out examples.
FF1 gets the nod from me though because it started everything and laid the groundwork very well, even though it has minor faults for its place in time, but in defense who ever has gotten an RPG so perfect the first time around when it comes to any video game franchise released in the 1980's? SS did, that's who. It stands high above PhantasyStar1 (not in graphics), for it's time, but it had the deepest battle system/character customization/equipment/spells/best soundtrack hands down/best dungeon design/map design the story was the archetypical good vs evil but like we know this is where the first final fantasy started this was also the 1980's we are talking about here basically every game back then was good versus evil/black and white in the 8-bit days.
Also without FF1's influence on RPG's as with Squaresoft influence later on as a company it's impossible to make any of the later FF games the way they came out period. Because they borrow tremendously from the first, and only; the original.
