Forums - Gaming - What made you switch consoles?

My Console history:
2nd Gen - Coleco Vision + Expansion module # 1 played Atari 2600 games, & my grandparents had an Intellivision which we played while visiting them (and I bought one years later off eBay for nostalgia).
3rd Gen - NES, my parents had bought the Atari 7800 the year before but that was all but forgotten after the NES arrived the following Christmas.
4th Gen - SNES, Genesis (Secondary) which a college mate sold me in 1995 for $15 which I would have ended up skipping otherwise
5th Gen - N64 was the last console my parents bought for me and my younger brother, after that point I was working and could buy my own consoles. PS1 was the first console I purchased on my own (which broke the first day and I had to go back for a replacement). My friend had a Sega Saturn, and I liked a few of the games, so I bought one off eBay years later.
6th Gen - Gamecube, PS2, & Xbox. This was the first gen that I skipped Sega completely, as I had no confidence in the Dreamcast staying in the marketplace, which I was proven correct.
7th Gen - Wii, Xbox 360. This was the first Gen that I skipped Sony as the PS3 was priced far too high for a video game console in my opinion. By the time the price came down, I didn't bother with it. I was happy with the games I had for 360, despite not being happy with the hardware failure rate (between myself and my brother, we got hit with the RROD 3 times).
8th Gen - Wii U only so far. Xbox One is now the overpriced console of the gen for me. I might get the PS4 at some point, but don't plan to in the immediate future.

lol youre the one who started talking crap about memory values then when I sarcastically carried that on to imply if its so important then why doesnt nintendos games use more memory than PS?

now apprently its a stupid point and im the one who started it.

Youre correct in saying those points are idiotic, but heres the quote where you started it:

tbh nothing on this site would be classified as a first world problem, especially your replies.

and if nintendo did have trophies, I would consider making the centralised location nintendo over sony, ofcourse this is not an option since they do not offer the service or the third party games.

Really? You're admitting that your issue is even more trivial than a first world problem? That just makes it all the more amusing that it was bugging you enough to even bring it up in a post.

This is what's making it amusing. You're attempting to rile me up by saying that Nintendo fucked up and turned you off as a potential customer.  To that I'd say "Yes, they do that. They're a corporate entity. Corporate entities don't care about you, only your money". You do realise that applies to all three companies, right?

As for trophies themselves, if somebody gets their rocks off watching a visual representation of a memory location turning from a 0 to a 1 in a collection, more power to them...

so youre the hypocrit that has your 'rocks off'....more power to you.

first you think a trophy is about memory value and has nothing to do with the actions you perform in a game, and then you start comparing games with trophies.

either state youre point in 1 line or go away. dont go round and round in cirlces saying crap and then blame the stupidty that stems from it on me.

"So in other words, you're admitting that it was, in fact, a non-issue the entire time."

YES!!! finally! it is a non issue. the day nintendo gets better third party games, and has more hardcore exclsuives, Id switch with the blink of an eye even if it didnt have trophies!....thats what a "plus" is.... it will never be a sole reason to justify owning 1 system over another like games are.

ofcourse its still a fact that adding a trophy system to that hypothetical nintendo console would be a nice 'plus' feature for many of its users that causes no detrimental impact on the quality of the games to those who dont care about it.

I talked about memory values; you're the one who stated that faster changing values meant the better experience. I'll state it clearer for you, since it's obvious that you don't understand:

Unlike values internally registered within the game, trophies/achievements provide no extra merit to progress the game itself. While some MAY appear at the crux of a storyline, they're not the part itself that advances the game, rather the other way around. In other words, once they're set, they provide no other value to the game, or anything else other than for showoff value.

However, before you bring up the whole "it's all about the way to achieve them" thing, I'll raise 2 points:

1. How does giving a list of "things to do" count towards the way they're achieved? You might as well just be given a list of instructions on how to fully complete the game, for that matter. They have a "spolier" element to them and usually break the aesthetics between he game design and the underlying OS.

2. We all know how brilliant  all trophies can be, right? Oh right. In fact, one such game ridiculed the concept down to a tee:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B95T5ewzSpU

You see, a lot of said achievements/tropihies are meaningless, trivial little things that would hardly bear any achievement at all. This usually leads to a skew of bad game purchases made just to collect cheap trophies/achievements, and a mad misrepresentation of what the market actually wants (if you've complained about casuals in the gaming market before, then you should know EXACTLY where I'm coming from with this).

Additions are one thing, but if it comes at ANY expense to already established mechanics (such as games aesthetics), it's not as simple of an "addition" as you think it is. This is advice from somebody who designs/develops user requested additions to systems for a living.

Keep in mind that this has all stemmed from what you've just admitted is a non-issue to you, which is why you should have related to the pic, instead of taking it personally (and don't go denying this. You tried to use the "team mentality" bullshit to assume I'd get angry about Nintendo not having the same thing. Either that, or you just like making replies that have absolutely no relevance to the post you're replying to). Are you still willing to argue over this supposed non-issue? Each response is only showing just how much that pic dug deep into your non-issue opinion of trophies/achievements...

if you were a non-gamer, I could understand the crooked nature of your argument.

I just cant understand the way you neglect the trophy/achievement systems given that you play games which is also a "trivial" thing that "bears no achievement at all" and has been "ridiculed" even more so than the video in the link.

Its just hypocrisy at its finest.

Ah yes, now we're really getting into the reason why you felt so hurt...

I suggest you re-read my reasons as to why in many cases, it's not such as beneficial as an addition as you make it out to be, instead of trying to strawman the argument.

"If you're against trophies, then you're against gaming". Is that what you've finally resorted to? Really, I thought your argument was at least going to have at least SOME thought behind it, instead of a kneejerk response, just like what you did with the pic.

To enjoy achievements/trophies, you have to enjoy gaming, but you don't have to enjoy achievements/trophies in order to enjoy gaming. You do realise the difference between these two, right?

My my, I'm starting to think this is much less of a non-issue to you as you say it is...

call it what you will, but its a valid point.

The only reason you treat them differently is because you like playing games but you dont like collecting trophies.

I like doing both and thats not going to change.

Just out of interest, is it only trophies you like to try and shame by comparing them to full games, or are there any other features of a console you do the same with?

That's not a valid point at all. That's like saying entity A is a dog, a dog is a creature, has fur, makes noises. A cat is also a creature, has fur and makes noises, so entity A must also be a cat. It's not a logically sound argument, and I really can't believe that you're actually arguing this point, it only ridicules your defense even further. Honestly, you were making better ground when you were backpedalling on previous statements..

You're saying that trophy collecting is just as enthralling as the game itself? Well like I said before, if it gets your rocks off, more power to you...but you're right, I don't like something that interferes with the asthetics of a game, can openly give spoilers away, is mostly nothing but trivial tasks (could even be referred to as "chores"), creates fabricated class ladders in a market of skewed valuation and can give game developers the wrong idea of what the market wants.

You're the one who made the comparison to games with your nonsensical "games change memory too". I suggest that you read the previous reply once again, this time CAREFULLY, as the problems I've stated stem from the achievements/trophies themselves, not from the fact that they're "unlike games". You're making that generalisation yourself.

Is your last question a real question, or are you attempting to do the "team mentality" thing again? I've made numerous posts about how certain things can ruin the gameplay element in cases (Wii remote, a noncooperative console OS, certain contollers on larger hands, buttons like the DS3 shoulder pads or the 3DS power button functionlity). In other words, I'm not spoonfed a bunch of corporate bullshit and just sit around and take it. Corporate entities don't care about your feelings; why do you care about theirs?

I never switched, I was Nintendo only through the SNES and N64 generation and started getting Sony consoles at the end of the PS1´s lifespan.

Never looked back.

...oh and trophies? What a joke.

good logic with the cat and dog, except im not sure where I said trophies were games, ive used the terms 'plus' and 'feature' a lot, so im disappointed you havent taken notice of that.

"You're saying that trophy collecting is just as enthralling as the game itself?"

no I did not say that, you pulled it out of youre arse like most other things you *think* I have said.

You still havent explained why you do such a trivial thing such as playing games. It bears no achievement and has been ridiculed much more than trophies.

you cant see that the same argument youre using against me to not approve of trophies is being used by millions of people around to world to not approve of games in general which is a shame on you.

The feelings are towards a hobby, not a company. I just pick sony consoles because they release the most exclusives in the genres of games I like.

So you're saying that just because you class them as an 'addition', they should be exempt from scrutiny because they differ from games, yet at the same time you're trying to put them on the same class as games themselves to ask why I play games but do not bother with trophies. Brilliant reasoning there! Your contradictions on the same post are becoming more and more frequent.

The reason for the outline of the logical argument was that you cannot make a logical implication based on factors if ALL factors are not taken into consideration, and that's where your argument still fails. If this is what you consider a logically sound argument, I could ask you the contrary, that since you do everything that bears no achievement and is ridculed, why aren't you out there sucking bile out of dead roadkill, or arranging stones in order of size or importance (please God don't tell me that you actually do those things...) since those also meet said requirements to make the same connection?

Do you see now why your argument makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, or are you just going all-out now without any regards for making yourself look even more ridiculous? Shame on who? The only shame that I might have is finding amusement at your failure to grasp simple logical implication...

I don't believe your last paragraph for a second. Why? Because your kneejerk reaction to the pic was to try and ridicule Nintendo fans, not the people who do not like achievements/trophies in general. You're trying to hide your initial agenda, but it can be clearly seen: you're trying to NOT pass yourself as a defender of a corporate entity, but the thread history shows otherwise. Nice try though; unlike you, I can remember the entire history of the post, where your performance has ranged from contradicting yourself from 3 posts ago, to contradicting youself on the SAME post, with some backpedalling in between...

However, I can see clear as day as to what you're TRYING to do; you're trying to find something on me that I'm interested in that you can attack, despite everything that you bring up 1. having absolutely NO relevance to the initial topic, 2. failing miserably for being off target, or 3. something that I wouldn't give a shit about. Incredibly amusing however, watching you take stabs in the dark like that. Each miss is only making you look all the more desperate, and highlights your failure to argue both on-topic, and with reasonable logical implication in regards to the topic.

I used to be Nintendo only, but then I wanted to play Final Fantasy, so I got a Playstation.

That's really all there was to it now that I think about it.

You just sound silly when you talk about logic after writing such a long comment assuming games and trophies are mutually exclusive, and ignore the fact that in addition to collecting trophies, im still enjoying tons of great games of a wide variety, including multiplatforms, exclusives and indies.

Even if I side with the stupidity that its ok to compare trophies with games, I dont lose anything because I do both.

So once again, what is youre point?

If you want me to admit to something that makes you feel happy, just tell me and I will get this over and done with....and I will be furious if its something I already mentioned 10 comments ago and I have to requote it to you.
