pokoko said: SCEA does not develop games. That falls under SCE WWS. In order for the Vita to gain market-share in North America, it would need games that appeal to children, who make up a much larger percentage of the hand-held consumer base than in Europe or Japan. They would need more IP that they could market across an array of media, including toys and cartoons. They have nothing like that. My opinion is that Sony needs to invest in the creation of several such properties to see if any of them click. Honestly, you think they'd have a leg up in that regard thanks to their film presence. Another option would be to negotiate exclusive game rights to a toy/cartoon property owned by another company. They have the ability to turn that into a quality game series, not just a crappy one-off like you usually see. Before someone says anything about that copying Pokemon and Nintendo, it absolutely is, but children don't give a rat's ass who copied what. They just want the next popular thing. When it comes to creativity and artistic control, Sony's World Wide Studios is probably near the pinnacle. They allow their top developers to decide their next projects on their own. However, in certain regards, that's also their Achilles' heel. Nintendo's consolidated power structure allows them to manage their franchises extremely well and to leverage them into perennial money making machines. Sony's approach is fantastic for diversity but it makes pin-point marketing and direction much harder. |
They are attempting a bit of what you are talking about with invizmals. I was sad that i wouldn't be able to play a pokemon clone on Vita. It appears part of the reason the game has been delayed is to coincide with a cg animated television show about the series as well sometime in July. I just wish they put more money into a more appealing aesthetic for the game. For a game developed from no name studio it could compete well Wwith 300k sold with no advertisement in a single region I think they have hit potential. They just need to polish a few things.
I would also even have Insomniac put a more content rich version of their facebook pokeclone on the vita as well. I think that's a large enough market that having multiple bets wouldn't be a bad idea. I'm sure Insomniac could use a cash injection after a few Fuse.
I don't see why they can't create small spin offs of their large studios. They have some huge western teams. 10-15 from each of their top studios would be more than enough for great Vita sized projects. They also dont incur any extra cost due to them being existing resources so to speak outside of marketing(which if they push on PSN doesn't have to be huge). Just direct them torwards creating the types of games they need.
Say San Diego had 10-15 people and made more simple sports games for Vita, Small slice of Sucker Punch for another 3d Platformer, Bend on a 3rd person shooter with heavy emphasis on co op play and loot, Tiny slice of ND to make another Crash Team Racing. Santa Monica on an RPG? Either way it would be 5 to 6 studios making games that are more likely to be of high quality for their platform.
