Forums - Movies & TV - Could M. Night Shyamalan Ever Redeem Himself?

M.Night has been commonly known this past decade to be one of the worst directors in film, and I agree. But could he potentially redeem himself?

We've seen that he can make great movies. The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs, etc. Also, his 2010 film "Devil" isn't too terrible, and it's a step in the right direction. But after two of the worst movies created (The Last Airbender, After Earth) I am scared that this director that had so much potential will countinue to make piles of dogshit.

The Last Airbender is hardly as bad as everyone makes it out to be. It just doesn't live up to the animation

Yeah...hes is just very iconsistent.

also, he has many good ideas but bad execution a lot of the time.

I don't think I've ever seen anything like Shyamalan's fall from grace. In 1999, he was being compared to Steven Spielberg. Now he's a punchline.

Maybe The Sixth Sense was just a perfect storm, I don't know. It's hard to explain how Shyamalan could make such a drum-tight, intelligent thriller, then follow it up with so many self-serving and unfocused movies.

The plottwist is that he WILL redeem. It's a plottwist in his own life.

Yeah, it's kind of sad.

In the wilderness we go alone with our new knowledge and strength.

I'm a fan of M Night. But first step to understanding him is to admit that 6th Sense is a tad bit overated. Signs, Village and Unbreakable are far better and more ambitious movies.

Its only really LITW and Happening that were disappointing but decent movies. Avatar was a complete disaster from the get go and After Earth only sucked because of the Smith family reunion and scientology themes.

Directors always have their ups and downs. Look at Ridley Scott, Oliver Stone they have made counltess amounts of flops.

Maybe he needs better writers.

Maybe. Unbreakable, The Sixth Sense & Signs HD Collection incoming.

I also liked The Village but i know it was a bad movie or it was wrongly marketed as horror movie.

Only movie of his I enjoyed is Sixth Sense. But his other movies weren't unwatchable...just nothing special.

There are many other, lesser known directors that I would trust to make a good movie, rather than M. Night.
Joe Carnahan for example
