Forums - Movies & TV - Could M. Night Shyamalan Ever Redeem Himself?

M.Night has been commonly known this past decade to be one of the worst directors in film, and I agree. But could he potentially redeem himself?

We've seen that he can make great movies. The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs, etc. Also, his 2010 film "Devil" isn't too terrible, and it's a step in the right direction. But after two of the worst movies created (The Last Airbender, After Earth) I am scared that this director that had so much potential will countinue to make piles of dogshit.

I'm constanty amazed at how many people think Signs is a good movie. It was mediocre at best IMO. I think Sixth Sense is his only truly great movie, with Unbreakable being excellent in parts, but I recall being rather let down by the ending, though I might be mis-remembering and projecting other of his movies on to it.

Unfortunately it seems most of his movies have ended up being profitable, including the bad one so producers will keep throwing money at him.

And no, I don't think he will make another great movie, he might make some more watchable ones though.

I think he should just stop making movies. Clearly The Sixth Sense was just a fluke, everything else has been terrible. Well I guess Signs was okay, still pretty mediocre.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

No, he will forever be associated with shitty plot twists.

Ironically, I've seen almost every one of his movies except The Sixth Sense (by the time I could watch it, the big reveal was well spoiled). They range from "hot trash" to "underwhelming."

Just saw Unbreakable the other day. Was engaging until the very last minute, when Shyamalan mailed in the ending with a black card and a few lines of text. I am now through with him for good.

After earth wasnt even close to being the worst movie ever created, sure it was a medicore crappy movie, but it was pure genius when compared to the worst movie shyamalan created, the happening.  Now that movie was a pile of turd that belongs with the likes of uew boll movies...

the last airbender was bad, and it showed shyamalan actually doesnt have any talent for scriptwriting.  Do I think shyamalan can redeem himself?  No, i dont.  I think he had a limited number of good ideas, and was successful because of them.  He doesnt avtually have the talent to create anything more, he is done.  (By the way, I used to be the biggest shyamalan fan.  Up until the happening came out I was always talking about how awesome he was...)

Maybe he needs better writers.

Lol, since he writes everything he does himself, clearly he does

I think its just that well... Modern movies are TERRIBLE in general. Most people just don't realize it unless they can compare it to something else like the Last Airbender. Good movies almost never get made anymore because people can't tell the difference anymore... They all want million dollar special effects and jaw dropping action and crazy fast martial arts... Great movies are 2 hours of a film director meticulously filming every scene of a story using every filming technique to their fullest.

Look at Alfred Hitchcock if you need an example. "Rear Window" for instance, everything just shows how much effort the director put in. The camera shows a classic san francisco setting, then it moves to the time (it's the middle of the day), then the camera shows a high quality camera sitting on the desk, then it moves to a man sitting at his window with a pair of binoculars staring at his neighbors with a cast on one foot.

In just 2 minutes time, without a single word being spoken you learned that the setting was sanfrancisco, and the story was about a photographer who couldn't work because his leg was broken and now all he could do to pass the time was spy on his neighbors. Now that is CLASSY!

PS Don't quote me on Rear Window, I am going off of memory.

To put this bluntly, after the shitfest known as The Last Airbender....

Probably if he makes a good TLA 2.

The Last Airbender is hardly as bad as everyone makes it out to be. It just doesn't live up to the animation

I agree with this. I only watched pieces of the animation and i thought the movie was entertaining. I was actually looking forward to the sequals until i found out everyone hated it.
