I think its just that well... Modern movies are TERRIBLE in general. Most people just don't realize it unless they can compare it to something else like the Last Airbender. Good movies almost never get made anymore because people can't tell the difference anymore... They all want million dollar special effects and jaw dropping action and crazy fast martial arts... Great movies are 2 hours of a film director meticulously filming every scene of a story using every filming technique to their fullest.
Look at Alfred Hitchcock if you need an example. "Rear Window" for instance, everything just shows how much effort the director put in. The camera shows a classic san francisco setting, then it moves to the time (it's the middle of the day), then the camera shows a high quality camera sitting on the desk, then it moves to a man sitting at his window with a pair of binoculars staring at his neighbors with a cast on one foot.
In just 2 minutes time, without a single word being spoken you learned that the setting was sanfrancisco, and the story was about a photographer who couldn't work because his leg was broken and now all he could do to pass the time was spy on his neighbors. Now that is CLASSY!
PS Don't quote me on Rear Window, I am going off of memory.
