Forums - Nintendo - Mutant Mudds gets most revenue from 3DS version

Hey, I hope they continue to support the Vita. I'd love for Sony fans to be able to play Renegade Kid's games. But simultaneous multiplatform releases of future titles might not be within their capabilities, and the 3DS is simply a healthier system for them to focus on.

Right now I just hope US PS owners haven't shunned it so much that the European release never happens :/ They have money ready for their UK Vita release.

He seems more pleased with their sales on PSN, saying they're "OK" and, well, just not voicing any disappointment with them as he is with Steam.

Look at the release pattern, game genre and at the developer... if you tell me it wasnt obvious its going to sell best on the 3DS Il believe you. But only if you honestly believe what you are saying .

This has nothing to do whether it was obvious or not, I never even stated such a thing. A version of a game generated more money on the 3DS eShop than it's counterparts on several different platforms combined, including Steam and iTunes. I thought this was good news for the 3DS, so I posted it. And not even 10 replies in and some people are trying to downplay it, I find that hilarious.

Now you answer my question, and anyone can answer, not just hunter_alien. Does one developer finding success on the 3DS scares you so much that you have to immediately downplay it, does it make you afraid that other developers might see it and start to make games for the 3DS, is your faith in the Vita, let's be honest this is what you and a few others focused on immediately when I considered selling more than on iOS and Steam more important, so small that even the tiniest piece of nice news for the 3DS terrifies you?

Not even a bit my dear friend If anything Im glad that Nintendo is starting to build up a stable online environment. God knows they need it.

I was just pointing out the obvious, something that you have managed to leave out entirely in your original post.

VGC is all about the numbers and financial sittuations, whenever you post something that gives some extra info, be prepared for the dissection. THATS WHAT WE DO! Thats what sets appart VGC from other forums. We dont just gubble up the information we receive from developers, publishgers or other analysts. We try to get as much out of it as we can. You showed us the positive side of the story, I simply tried to explain why that positive side exists. Simple as that.

Never call me your dear friend. It cheapens the repression.

And allow me to also point out the obvious, Steam+iOS+PSN have more customers than the 3DS eShop. Something which you have omitted from stating. And again I point out the first platform you went to defend was Sony's, when no one had made any statement again.

And also, no, most of the times on these forums we spin various news in favor of which company we personally support. Remember when the Wii and Wii U got late ports and then some people were blaming the consoles on why those games were not selling as good as their counterparts on other platforms? I do.

I thought it was a 3DS exclusive.

I believe it came out first on the 3DS eshop but then released to other platforms later.  The Steam version included a few more levels which they eventually released on a patch to the 3DS version for free.

I remember reading somewhere that they have since signed a deal for fututre releases to be eshop exclusives.

This thread reminds me that I still need to get Mutant Mudds. Probably gonna go for the Wii U version.

...They never said anything like that. All year they've been talking about expanding to other consoles. That's what 2013 was all about for them. They are still primarily a 3DS developer, but they never said anything about exclusivity.

Not really surprising both this game and Gunman Clive are only really notable for being early titles on the eShop. I have seen no media coverage of any versions other than the 3DS versions for both games. And platformers like them don't really work well for touch controls so it's not surprising they were lost in the torrent of mobile titles.

Just looking at Metacritic tells the tale pretty well

Mutant Mudds 3DS 26 reviews
Mutant Mudds PC 7 Reviews
Mutant Mudds iOS 9 Reviews
Mutant Mudds Deluxe PlayStation Vita 0 reviews

PC and iOS and to a lesser extent the Vita are flooded with downloadable titles you really need some media attention or a lot of positive buzz around your game to stand out and sell on those platforms. Congrats to the Devs for finding and exploiting an underserved niche tho. For an indie title with no marketing finding an underserved niche in the market is a key to success. People over exagerate the importance of installbase, it doesn't matter if there is a huge installbase if none of them know of or care about your title. It's better to have a small captive audiance than a massive one that doesn't care.

But.... but, we are friends on VGC :(

And the reason I defended Sony was because they are the only 2 dedicated handheld manufacturers, so comparisons are natural.

Gunman Clive wasn't released until 2013. The eShop was a year and a half old and had a lot of worthwhile games by then. It was also released on mobile devices in April 2012, long before its eShop release, and received a big promotion on Google Play which directly caused most of its sales. And for the record, Clive's developer himself was quite surprised by the sales he has achieved on the eShop.

The most notable trend is that both developers continue to stress the fact that these games are still selling well right now. Mudds is about 2 years old now and is still legging out nicely. Clive's legs are insane compared to the mobile versions. These games didn't sell well for a month or six and then fade into the shadows of the eShop; they continue to sell well to this day.

Suggesting that only platformers or games released early in the 3DS's life can be successful on the eShop is silly. It's a disservice to developers like Shin'en who find success with puzzle games, racing games, shmups, and platformers alike on the eShop. Renegade Kid currently has two FPS titles in development for the 3DS eShop. I think the recent success of SteamWorld Dig shows that critical reception is a very strong factor in eShop sales.

By the way Sony fans, Shu Yoshida is playing Mutant Mudds on his Vita and so should you. :P
