Look at the release pattern, game genre and at the developer... if you tell me it wasnt obvious its going to sell best on the 3DS Il believe you. But only if you honestly believe what you are saying .

This has nothing to do whether it was obvious or not, I never even stated such a thing. A version of a game generated more money on the 3DS eShop than it's counterparts on several different platforms combined, including Steam and iTunes. I thought this was good news for the 3DS, so I posted it. And not even 10 replies in and some people are trying to downplay it, I find that hilarious.

Now you answer my question, and anyone can answer, not just hunter_alien. Does one developer finding success on the 3DS scares you so much that you have to immediately downplay it, does it make you afraid that other developers might see it and start to make games for the 3DS, is your faith in the Vita, let's be honest this is what you and a few others focused on immediately when I considered selling more than on iOS and Steam more important, so small that even the tiniest piece of nice news for the 3DS terrifies you?

It does to Sony fans cause Vita is suppose to be the indie machine for success, not the 3ds... Who cares that the indie guys are making money... Its about which platform sells the most, not about supporting the developer!!!!

No wonder. Games like that work best on a handheld. I bought the iOS-version, but I don't like the touchscreen controls (virtual d-pad and virtual buttons) for that game.

At home I play "bigger" games, so I wouldn#t buy it for PC or home consoles. When it arrives in the European PSN (it is only released yet in the NA PSN), I will buy it for the Vita.

Indie machine for success? No, just the machine that is getting lots of indie loving. They seem to be making money off it, hence continuing to include Vita in their platforms on future projects.

Mutant Mudds had 14 days on sale in the US on Vita and the US is Vita's weakest market. I'm not saying it's going to outsell the 3DS version, I wouldn't expect it to, but I'd wager the majority of potential sales for the game on Vita aren't even possible at the moment as it's not available to most Vita owners who would be likely to buy it.

Just like Gunman Clive did, which IIRC launched on 3DS last (ignoring the Steam version released yesterday). 3DS is a good platform for platformers :D

Interesting, though the Steam and PSN releases are surely too recent to be taken as large factors there. Wii U version came out months ago though, and got great advertising space on the eShop.

To those here pretending this game basically had no competition on the 3DS, it came out right after Mario Kart and 3D Land, right in the middle of the Pushmo / Mighty Switch Force / VVVVVV / Sakura Samurai / Dillon's Rolling Western wave of eShop releases (all of those games were critically well received and released within a 10-week period in late 2011-early 2012).

The Wii U is where the game had no competition. It was released in June, when there hadn't been a significant eShop release since April and wouldn't be another until August, and only Game&Wario and New Super Luigi U from Nintendo in the general vicinity of its release, with exclusive additional content not available in the 3DS version.

This reminds me of Gunman Clive, which sold more on 3DS than on iOS, Android, and PC combined (the developer basically confirmed that the numbers are around 200k in the eShop, 50k everywhere else).

Anyway, good news for 3DS, great news for Renegade Kid, I'm happy for them. Looking forward to their next few games; they're going to have a big year.

EDIT: Also, Jools commented last week about sales on Steam: "Doesn't look like we're going to get rich from Mudds on Steam. 1900 copies sold. 1400 at 50% off. 442 at 10% off. 58 at full price. Sigh." It seems the game has already been on sale for 50% off.

So, it's not a 3DS exclusive anymore?

Nope, hasn't been for a while. It even supports cross-buy and cross-save on PSN.

Doesn't seem to matter though. Jools has even stated that porting future titles to Steam is not likely due to Mudds' disappointing sales there.

He did say that it would have sold more if it released on all the platforms at the same time. So, basically, they missed out on revenue because they made the game timed-exclusive.

Did they make it a timed exclusive? Or was that more down to staffing limitations? Remember they're an indie studio. Multiple formats requires more resources.

They're a very small studio. They had to make time to port it to those other systems -- time they could have spent working on their next games. The creator seems to think the time spent developing the Steam port was not time well spent. As for PSN, who knows. But it's clearly more financially viable for them to release on one platform, then wait to see how well it is received before they decide to port it. Especially when you consider that Mutant Mudds was their first game developed independently of a publisher, and they weren't very confident about how well it would sell.

I'm sure they didn't feel the need to double their development time of Bomb Monkey and ATV Wild Ride 3D to ensure simultaneous multiplatform releases on Steam, PSN, Wii U, and iOS.

The Vita also hadn't yet launched in the west when the game was released on 3DS, so it would have to have been delayed to release simultaneously on both platforms.

And considering how displeased Jools seems with Mudds' sales through Steam in the past 6 weeks, I'd be willing to bet the game sold way more than 1900 copies on 3DS in the same time frame. This means there was more demand for the game among the few million new 3DS owners this Holiday season than among the entire userbase of Steam. What if the same is true of PSN, and of iOS, and of Wii U?

Hey, I hope they continue to support the Vita. I'd love for Sony fans to be able to play Renegade Kid's games. But simultaneous multiplatform releases of future titles might not be within their capabilities, and the 3DS is simply a healthier system for them to focus on.
