Side note anyone pick up that 4k 39" monitor from sears for Black Friday @ sub 500$? If so how is it?

A friend of mine that works at TigerDirect got it. The Seiki 39 inch...

His summary is as follows:

- As a TV for watching, its meh unless you watch 4K content

- As a gaming display its unusable cause it doesn't 4K at 30Hz

- As a PC monitor for desktop and productivity its awesome. Lots of screen realestate...

It was still going for $499 on Amazon last week.

My ears perked up when talk of sub $1000 4k displays came about, but after researching the limitations listed above, about the only thing I'd be able to use it for is editing 4k video as a computer display.

I suppose it would be pretty useful for production apps in terms of the amount of menus and windows one could have open in Maya or Premier or After Effects. And even in Photoshop, it would mean a lot less zooming.

I think I just nearly convinced myself to buy one.

The twiter link doesn't work.

Isn't 10 GB an odd number? Titan has 6 GB so that would make 12 on a dual GPU card, and the 780Ti has 3GB that would be 6 GB.

Oh, and I want to see the power consumption figures for that beast.

Edit to clarify, at the bottom is the original tweet.

Thanks.

Dual GPU cards like this are kinda lame.

Not like AMD cant/wont just make a dual R 290 to compete.

The raw numbers are impressive though. 5 times as powerful as PS4 at least.

I'd be inclined to call fake anyway, havent checked it out but some of the numbers dont seem to add up.

How much power does a 780 draw? That's another problem. I dont think they can make a 600 watt card,

Considering what happened with the Titan, I'd suggest waiting for what happens with Maxwell before jumping on board with this. Nvidia's handling of high end cards has been...odd this year.

Plus for me personally, I'd rather have a more stable, less power hungry single GPU set up.

Have some time to kill? Read my shitty games blog. http://www.pixlbit.com/blogs/586/gigantor21

It doesn't exactly work like that, when running multiple GPU's, you don't get a linear increase in power consumption due to inherent inefficiencies in SLI and Crossfire that prevents all the transisters in a GPU from being utilised.

That's added onto the fact that the chips for these kinds of cards are essentially cherry-picked out of an entire batch, only the lowest leakage-chips are used in order to conserve power, bundle that with better and more energy efficient power delivery... And it's easily feasible.

AMD for instance has always thrown "250-300w" GPU's on a single board, yet power consumption has never doubled over a single GPU card.

I do personally think this rumour is a fake though, 640bit bus seems rather uncanny for nVidia to fall towards, more likely it would be a 2x 384bit and feature 6Gb GDDR5, I just don't see nVidia re-designing the memory controller or going with an asynchronous DRAM set-up for just this.

Why would anyone buy this when Maxwell GPU's are expected to arrive in March?

Because this is a dual GPU card and more powerful than anything Maxwell will have available for a long time.

Unless history repeats itself. In the year that followed the start of the 7th console generation, GPU peformance made a major leap:

The single GPU 8800 GTX was up to 50% faster than the (only a few months older) dual GPU 7950 GX2, less noisy, cooler temperatures and no SLI problems.

Perhaps Nvidia steps up its game again. They have to compete again with a fresh console generation and even the names are similar:

8800 GTX > 7950 GX2 (2006), GTX 880 > GTX 790 (2014)

This is aincent hisotry your listing here. The launch of the console generation has very little to do with current high end GPU market. Its not like these consoles are pushing PC GPUs in terms of performance.

Look at more moden history...

GTX 590 > GTX 680

GTX 690 > GTX 780/Titan/Ti

In strict business sense, something Nvidia is very good at as of late...its very doubtful you will see more than 25% performance improvement with Maxwell over 780 Ti.

Maxwell be made on 28nm process initially, right (and all through 2014)? So you are guessing a rufly 25% increase thanks to the Maxwell architecture compared to Kepler?

When do you think we'll see 20nm GPUs?

Current Kepler gpus are 28nm therefore Maxwell series should be 20nm.

I also don't think architecture improvements will yield the most Maxwell improvements over Kepler. They will probably just clock them higher since they consume less power and generate less heat, due to being based on a smaller die. And add more cores of course.... one always needs MOAR COREZ :)

The GPU market is becoming mature at this point so we are most likely looking at minor power improvements moving forward, bundled with new additional features like GSync, NVIDIA Shield support...etc

This!

Going with a single card will always bring less troubles that going SLI/Xfire.
