Super Mario 64 - Because it did it right the first time. Was such a graphical jump from everything else at the time, really pushed the N64, and it was a well made game.

Galaxy is fun, but being in 480p feels a bit gritty. It might push the Wii, but the Wii is not the graphical house it used to be.

So you're judging SM64 for it's time, but Galaxy by how it holds up today? Bit of a double standard, isn't it?

No. Galaxy wasn't at all graphically impressive for its time (compared to PS3/360 games it looked meh), but Super Mario 64 looked AMAZING for its time, and for a long while after. Plus it still looks good, a real graphical lightlight from then 90's.

Galaxy recieved a lot of praise for its visuals in 2007.

I don't get the Super Mario 64 camp. I love the game's exploration-heavy layout, but I feel like it aged somewhat poorly. I still pop it in from time to time, but more for nostalgic purposes. The platforming is so sluggish and most of the challenges are ridiculously simple. A kid might play something like Ocarina of Time now and still think it was cool, but I feel like a kid wouldn't have a very good time with Mario 64.

I'm all about Sunshine, which I realize makes me a minority. I'll take a big world to play around in with places to explore and stuff to find over linear levels any day. Galaxy was fun, but it lacks the depth that I enjoyed in the first two 3D Marios. Galaxy is something I pick up and play through once, then I'm done with it. Sunshine I return to again and again.

Currently playing:

Bloodbath Paddy Wagon Ultra 9

1. Mario 64
2. 3D World

And then the rest.

No doubt in my mind, Super Mario Galaxy takes the cake.

Super Mario 64 - I'll beat this game (only one of the all 3D Mario games). Why I choose SM64? Because this is challenging game :)

To be honest I like em all equally with 2 exceptions...sunshine was still a great game but, to me, it was slightly disappointing at the time. I waited seemingly years for a follow up to 64 but it didn't quite blow my mind in the same way. As I said it was still a great game though. Also, Galaxy 1 I thought was a tad bit too easy for my liking. Galaxy 2 upped the challenge a bit.

All in all I've never met a 3D Mario game I didn't like.

(I'm disappointed 3d land received so few votes but I guess it's forgivable when 3d world received so many!)

Galaxy

Switch!!!

Super Mario Galaxy of course! It's my favourite video game of all time also!

For a Wii game in 2007 it looks great. However for a video game in 2007 it looks meh.

Super Mario 64 on the other hand looked amazing as an N64 game AND as a video game in general in 1995.

Plus graphics aren't everything, Galaxy is fun, but the physics engine doesn't push the console as much as Super Mario 64 did in 1995, and I don't much care for the CG in Galaxy. Basically I think Galaxy is as good of a game as Super Mario 64, but Super Mario 64 did everything Galaxy does a decade sooner. That's why it's my favorite Mario platformer.

Mario 64 had spherical gravity? Motion controls? :p
