Tagged as I'm gonna get SM3DW this weekend and then maybe I can formulat a better answer.

Current PC Build

CPU - i7 8700K 3.7 GHz (4.7 GHz turbo) 6 cores OC'd to 5.2 GHz with Watercooling (Hydro Series H110i) | MB - Gigabyte Z370 HD3P ATX | Gigabyte GTX 1080ti Gaming OC BLACK 11G (1657 MHz Boost Core / 11010 MHz Memory) | RAM - Corsair DIMM 32GB DDR4, 2400 MHz | PSU - Corsair CX650M (80+ Bronze) 650W | Audio - Asus Essence STX II 7.1 | Monitor - Samsung U28E590D 4K UHD, Freesync, 1 ms, 60 Hz, 28"

I don't consider Super Mario 3D Land and World to be 3D Mario games. They are isometric platformers, not 3D platformers. Also, I look at Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 the same way I look at New Super Mario Bros U and New Super Luigi U. It's more of a glorified expansion pack to me. An amazing expansion pack, but still largely two parts of one game. With that, the best 3D Mario game is Super Mario Galaxy 1 + 2.

Super Mario Galaxy.
About as close to perfection as a video game can get.

The only correct answer would be Super Mario 64.

I was going to saying Mario 64 but then again I just finished Super Mario 3D World and I still have that lingering feeling from playing it, I've never seen such a creative game in my life, how every level is so unique and new.

12 WORLDs!!! EVERY LEVEL was SHOCKLY new from the previous level.

You guys should watch the gameplay for the last stage in Super Mario 3D World on youtube, the stage is like 5-7 mins long.

Super Mario 64.

I recently played Mario Galaxy again with a few friends and was totally confused by how often the game uses the pointer function of the Wiimote and stupid, gimmicky stuff. Super Mario 64 is pure 3D jump 'n' run, Mario Galaxy is more like "we tossed in every gimmick we could" and I don't like it when games feel bloated.

Very hard to decide between Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario 3D World.

Saw that champion road video and I get the feeling from the video alone that the Perfect Run was much harder. I'll probably see it when I actually play it, but I remember The Perfect Run as being a total hell.
