Like I said in another thread, I do believe that mobile/tablets are eating into the handheld market. But it will most definetly not kill completely that market. I believe there will always have some room for 1 good selling handheld (80-100M).
Not to mention, handhelds (Nintendo and Sony) will most likely adapt to the changing market.
Predictions for LT console sales:
PS4: 120M
XB1: 70M
WiiU: 14M
3DS: 60M
Vita: 13M

While I don't think the 3DS numbers are way off, just saying they are 100k+ lower than last year doesn't tell the whole story. Japan alone makes up more than the total YoY drop, and we can be pretty confident with those numbers thanks to data from multiple other trackers. While we don't have UK numbers for the week ending the 21st yet, it will likely bring the LTD to around 2.6 million. This is at odds with the recent news on December 19th that it had just passed 2 million. The strong weekly hardware sales also seem fairly incongruous with the low number and placement of 3DS software in the Chart Track top 40. Last year also had the week ending one day closer to Christmas. Probably not a huge factor, but it could have an influence of a few percent. With that said, I don't think 3DS sales are absolutely incorrect, but being down YoY worldwide isn't a reason to discount that possibility. |
While I am not going to argue that the 3DS might be overtracked in UK, we simply can't know for sure when that 400-500k was actually overtracked. Was it in 2012? In 2011? In 2013? We don't know, which is also why I believe vg didn't adjust these numbers yet.
For the rest, we'll just have to wait for NPD. But I seriously doubt it will be overtracked.
Also, when will January's NPD numbers be released?

That's precisely my point though; dedicated handhelds are going away. Portable devices with the main focus on games and gaming.
I'm not so sure that there will be room for any handheld to sell as much as 80-100 million in the 9th gen and onwards, then again; it's terribly hard to predict things like that with the maket being in such a fluctuating state today and in the near future.
Guys, I have a feeling Microsoft will discontinue XBone, you wouldn't see xbox next generation.
Probably Nintendo, Sony and SteamMachine

I agree, it's very hard to predict this market. But to be quite honnest, the handheld market sold roughly 16M units in 2013 and I truly believe that if smartphones/tablets have done any damage (which they did), it's all been done already. I can't see handhelds being dramatically less popular in 5years then they are currently, let alone next year.
I think that smartphones and tablets have basically set the handheld market size back to when it originally debuted with GB. Meaning a potential market of around 100-120M. I can't see it going much lower then that tbh. But that's all just speculation on my part.

Speaking for myself I have five PS4 games. Four were downloaded from PSN. If most owners are like me then there is your reason for low games sales. If they are not like me then indeed
Very good to see the wii u in the mix. I really don't think the xbone not being in Japan would have changed much. Anyone that thinks it would need to look at the x360 sales and ask themselves how a far more expensive xbone would have been any different.
NA sure loves their XBOX. Even more so than their Nintendo consoles it seems.
Xbox beasting in America as always, PS4 EU numbers are insane, but considering Xbox hasn't released in most parts of EU yet its too early to call it a Massacre, Wii U has heart, solid numbers, 3ds is Nintendo's pot of Gold, Vita :(..., .all in all looking pretty good gaming this holiday season :)

If you honestly believe that the countries the xbox one has not been released in Europe is going to make any significant improvement to its sales then fair enough. All I can say is the the countries in Europe that xbone is currently available makes up 90 percent or more of the Euro market.
Therefore I pretty much call it a massacre.
