In terms of gaming its a fad, voice controls will carry on improving, just not sure why people think you need a camera for that.

The camera adds more functionality. That's why Sony made one for PS4.

Sony Fanboys - "Yes", but they still end up buying the Eye to get the same experience and show M$ fans their console can do everything Xbone can.

M$ Fanboys - "No". It's an import part of the UI that the Xbox One was built around. It's a low level AI that shouldn't be dismissed. Once you experience will never want to go back. Shouting at the TV is OK

I think the above examples miss the point.

On the Sony side, it doesn't matter if the PS4 camera provides a similar experience, and if some desire this. The Kinect remains a fad, one the PS camera failed to duplicate in terms of the excitement levels the Kinect originally engendered. So, the fact the Kinect was a fad is not impacted by the popularity, or not, of the PS camera, and is not impacted if individuals claiming the Kinect was a fad want the camera or not.

On the Microsoft side, it doesn't matter how important the Kinect-based functions may be to the One experience, that doesn't change the fact the Kinect once drew extraordinary excitement, and now no longer does. It was a fad that died. Now the Kinect is just a part of the Xbox fabric, one that we are all stuck with, for good or ill, depending upon your point-of-view. The One is selling well now, but few would argue it's because of the Kinect -- that fad for that device has ended -- it's selling well for a variety of other reasons.

couldnt have said it better my self, thats pretty much what i think.

Microsoft tried to make the Kinect the new Wii but failed for these reasons:

a) It was too expensive. The Wii was $250, the Xbox 360 with Kinect was like $400 back then
b) The Wii already got most of that audience, the Kinect was not much different
c) The Kinect DID get a big chunk of that audience, however, but because it was aimed at the casual audience we got games to try and appeal to them, rather than hardcore gamers
d) Microsoft barely supported it. Nintendo supported the Wii with tons of great games, including heavy hitters like Mario, Zelda, Mario Kart, and Metroid. Also, Nintendo kept the casual audiences coming back with Wii Fit, Wii Sports Resort, Wii Party, Wii Play, etc. etc. Microsoft had a big launch and just quit after that.
e) Kinect never got its killer app. It never got its Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Wii Play, Mario Kart, etc. etc.

Microsoft needs to support the Kinect more, and get more heavy hitters for it. Delaying Kinect Sports Rivals was a huge mistake. The Kinect needs at least 2 AAA games by the end of 2014 to justify it for hardcore gamers, and for casuals, it needs a SUPER hit like Wii Play or Wii Fit.

Maybe get Shenmue 3 for Kinect or something like that. It needs a huge hit that makes Kinect necessary.

Saying MS was trying to make Kinect the next Wii is an unrealistic expectation. No way MS anticipated that. More realistically, I feel they wanted to bring a casual audience to their platform and it was very successful at that. PS Move was an attempt to bring a casual audience to PS3 and failed.

a) Price didn't stop Kinect from being one of the best selling add-ons ever.
b) It brought millions of casuals to Xbox 360 and sold more hardware. It was part of the 360 rebranding.
c) The 360 already catered to core gamers. The Kinect was primarily for casual audiences.
d) Expecting the same support on Kinect as the Wii is unrealistic. The Kinect was just intended to feel some voids that could appeal to the casual audience. It sounds like you wanted every MS game to be a Kinect game.
e) Kinect Adventures helped sell the hardware, it was a killer app. Kinect Sports sold over 5.5 million, that's great sales even for a AAA game.

Do you really think Shenmue fans would buy a Kinect? Fable is a more successful IP and that didn't sell well on Kinect. Core gamers don't want core experiences on Kinect. Core games should stay on the gamepad, but some casual experiences are great for Kinect.

It's not a fad, it's more like the tablet controller

The tablet controller wasn't a massive success.

Kinect might be one of the most successful game console add-ons ever. Its success is up there with the Wii Balance Board, but Kinect is still around because its cabable of much more.

I was more thinking in the way that it can be a great addition if it is implemented right, but it has yet to be seem how many developers make an effort, and it certainly makes the console more expensive.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

I really don't think there is anything particularly interesting that Nintendo can do with the tablet gamepad. They should have kept their focus on motion gaming.

It appears to me MS is prepared to remove that Kinect.

Motion Gaming isnt a fad, its just that those new genres tend to be for casual gamers. Motion Gaming still has huge potential for core gamers (if they adopt VR). Gaming really has to change drastically for motion controls to become a main input device. 3Dcameras are very bad for VR. It adds a lot of latency which causes motion sickness. Microsoft bets on solving this for their VR goggles.

One day we will laugh at fast-paced FPSs optimized for Keyboard + Mouse (counterstrike) or inferior but arguably good enough controller (Call of Duty) to a slower paced motion controller (probably on body and not a 3D camera) thats much more immersive.

Motion controls are a transformational technology (not all the pieces of the puzzle are complete and prices still need to come down). Microsoft is just way to early to attract core gamers with Kinect. I doubt they ever will this generation.

The Xbox One just launched and every one of them comes with the Kinect, which MS built the entire experience around.

LOL @ fad.

How is that different than the Wii? Motion controls were bundled and the entire experience was built around them. People loved it to death causing it to break sales records, but in the end it still was a fad.

MS actually went deeper with Kinect from one gen to another, Nintendo on the other hand is focusing much less on motion controls with Wii U.

If it were a fad then its use would have been deplenished last gen and MS would have focused elsewhere since, you know, fads come and go.

I dont think gestures and voice command are fads - this is being incorporated into smart tvs and smartphones (to a lesser extent). Kinect hwever is a different matter - its use as a definitive gaming experience enhancer has still not happened and even if voice command improves hugely I still dont think the advantage it it overcomes the deficiencies inherent in it. Essentially it will be like 3D in gaming.

<a href="https://psnprofiles.com/fauzman"><img src="https://card.psnprofiles.com/2/fauzman.png" border="0"></a>

It was a fad back when it released, which is why sales dropped dramatically after awhile. Developers need to catch up to technology, and the kinect as good as it is, still isn't at a point where we can have insane experiences on it.
