Microsoft - is Kinect a fad? - View Post

Microsoft tried to make the Kinect the new Wii but failed for these reasons:

a) It was too expensive. The Wii was $250, the Xbox 360 with Kinect was like $400 back then
b) The Wii already got most of that audience, the Kinect was not much different
c) The Kinect DID get a big chunk of that audience, however, but because it was aimed at the casual audience we got games to try and appeal to them, rather than hardcore gamers
d) Microsoft barely supported it. Nintendo supported the Wii with tons of great games, including heavy hitters like Mario, Zelda, Mario Kart, and Metroid. Also, Nintendo kept the casual audiences coming back with Wii Fit, Wii Sports Resort, Wii Party, Wii Play, etc. etc. Microsoft had a big launch and just quit after that.
e) Kinect never got its killer app. It never got its Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Wii Play, Mario Kart, etc. etc.

Microsoft needs to support the Kinect more, and get more heavy hitters for it. Delaying Kinect Sports Rivals was a huge mistake. The Kinect needs at least 2 AAA games by the end of 2014 to justify it for hardcore gamers, and for casuals, it needs a SUPER hit like Wii Play or Wii Fit.

Maybe get Shenmue 3 for Kinect or something like that. It needs a huge hit that makes Kinect necessary.

Saying MS was trying to make Kinect the next Wii is an unrealistic expectation. No way MS anticipated that. More realistically, I feel they wanted to bring a casual audience to their platform and it was very successful at that. PS Move was an attempt to bring a casual audience to PS3 and failed.

a) Price didn't stop Kinect from being one of the best selling add-ons ever.
b) It brought millions of casuals to Xbox 360 and sold more hardware. It was part of the 360 rebranding.
c) The 360 already catered to core gamers. The Kinect was primarily for casual audiences.
d) Expecting the same support on Kinect as the Wii is unrealistic. The Kinect was just intended to feel some voids that could appeal to the casual audience. It sounds like you wanted every MS game to be a Kinect game.
e) Kinect Adventures helped sell the hardware, it was a killer app. Kinect Sports sold over 5.5 million, that's great sales even for a AAA game.

Do you really think Shenmue fans would buy a Kinect? Fable is a more successful IP and that didn't sell well on Kinect. Core gamers don't want core experiences on Kinect. Core games should stay on the gamepad, but some casual experiences are great for Kinect.
