Motion Gaming isnt a fad, its just that those new genres tend to be for casual gamers. Motion Gaming still has huge potential for core gamers (if they adopt VR). Gaming really has to change drastically for motion controls to become a main input device. 3Dcameras are very bad for VR. It adds a lot of latency which causes motion sickness. Microsoft bets on solving this for their VR goggles.
One day we will laugh at fast-paced FPSs optimized for Keyboard + Mouse (counterstrike) or inferior but arguably good enough controller (Call of Duty) to a slower paced motion controller (probably on body and not a 3D camera) thats much more immersive.
Motion controls are a transformational technology (not all the pieces of the puzzle are complete and prices still need to come down). Microsoft is just way to early to attract core gamers with Kinect. I doubt they ever will this generation.
