Forums - Politics - Gay marriage in... Utah? Update: on hold for now

http://www.cnn.com/2013/12/20/justice/utah-same-sex-marriage-ruling/index.html

so, a federal judge just overturned Utah's ban on gay marriage.  As of now, the acting attorny general is taking any application for marriage, regardless of straight or gay.

Does this surprise anyone?  I know most people thought Utah would be one the last places to have legalized gay marriage.  Obviously there are still court battles going on, but with the precident of prop 8 it is hard to see the ban being reinstated.

What do you guys think, gay marriage legalized country wide within a couple years as all these bans get overturned in the courts?

update:

the supreme court has just issued a freeze on same sex marriage while the ussue goes through the courts.  The ruling had no dissenting votes.  As this case is likely to be the one that appears before the supreme court eventually, what do you think the final word will be?

But how many gay husbands will Utah let you have?

We don't assign rights to groups. The Feds have no authority under the U.S Constitution to approve or disapprove Union between consenting adults. Churches can. Personally I think Marriage should be discouraged.. it's the leading cause of divorce.

Yaaaaas they saw the d and said dam we need to allow this all the time it is so good

Gay marriages doesn't bother me and this is coming from a Catholic, besides there is more important things in life to be worried about like Man Bear Pig.

Nice. Did not see that coming.

Hopefully this will speed things up in the more resistant states.

Huh, last state you'd think of.

Up next, Alabama

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

I heard some cheering today and had no idea what it was about. Yes, I thought Utah would be one of the last to approve. (Like how Mississippi just outlawed slavery in this year 2013 150 years later than most.) It's the home base of the Mormons who have been most active and spent hundreds of millions of dollars for the past 20+ years trying to ban same sex marriage.

Same Sex Marriages are already happening in Utah- although the governor it trying to stop them. As of 5:00pm when they closed the line there were another 75 couples waiting to get married. Those marriages will be recognized Federally (unless the state manages to mess them up) and every one makes it even more tough to overturn and take away those civil rights.

And for the record - same sex marriage is already the law of the land in the USA. With the Prop 8 and DOMA rulings marriages are recognized Federally. So if you get married in one state, another state legally has to recognize it, both for the recent ruling and because of Article IV, Section 1 the "full faith and credit clause" of the US Constitution.

It will just be a matter of time (and doesn't seem long now) till all the states with bans will have them thrown out. There are lawsuits against virtually every state with a ban - because it's citizens have travel to a state where it's legal and it violates the constitution not to recognize and official document from another state. (I.e. a girl can get married in a state say at 17 - then move to a state where you have to be 18 (theoretically illegal) yet they will recognize her marriage.)  It's kind of embarrassing that the USA is behind Argentina, South Africa, Brazil, Mexico and Uruguay, and many more.

For the record, I believe a same sex couple should have the same rights, privileges and responsibilities of an opposite sex couple. I've know a number of gay and lesbian couples to get married and it's a beautiful happy thing.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Tell me a funny joke!

Awesome, country wide same sex marriage legalization as well as weed being legalized in my lifetime, at least I hope. The deep South will be the last stronghold for sure.

I LOVE paying for Xbox Live! I also love that my love for it pisses off so many people.

Same state that legalized having multiple wifes. May as well kill marriage as it's meaningless now.
