So at which market would Nintendo aim with this? Parents with kids? They'll buy them an iPod touch... or a cheap tablet..

Primarily the Japanese market and people looking for a cheap Android phone and teens/adults who want to have a little "real" gaming fun to go with all the usual Android features they expect from a phone.

In fact, I would probably considering limiting quantities of the phone in the US/Europe at first. Roll it out in Japan first and see how it does.

Like I said, keep expectations reasonable, this would not be something that would compete with the iPhone or Galaxy at all. iPhone sells like 30-50 million in quarter. This is something that could still earn Nintendo a big, fat profit selling a modest 2-3 million a quarter worldwide.

hmmm.. I see.. but in Asia cheap powerfull android phones are much cheaper then 350.. anyway I would like to see a design like this, with a sleak phone and an attachment when you want to play nintendo games.. cause who needs buttons for Puzzle and Dragons

Nope. People wouldn't buy that to replace a mobile phone.

i'd consider it.  i'd also consider a vita phone.   honestly, vita should have been a phone.

...i need a phone.  i like to game.  would be nice if i could be both in one.  i mean, there are games on the IOs app store but not the kind of game i want.  not the kind of input/controls i want.  if someone can find a good way to mash them together i'd probably buy.

I promise you the end product would not be what you were hoping for. Not to mention, Nintendo using Android? When hell freezes over!

Nintendo has no beef with Google/Android. They're not a OS/media company, they have no dog in that fight. Android can be customized to Nintendo's hearts content and they've worked with Google before actually.

The Google Maps app for the Wii U was developed jointly by Nintendo and Google, Iwata had a Google higher up for Iwata Asks to talk about it.

I didn't say they had beef, I meant Nintendo would never stray from their own OS, they're far too closeminded for that.

It's ok for something like maps, but there is so much in the OP that Nintendo wouldn't agree to unless new management took over.

You tend to have to do some new things when you're in the tight spot Nintendo is in.

Besides it could still be "their" OS in most ways that they want it to be, Android is completely customizable. And its free to license too, which is a price I think Nintendo would find most agreeable. Designing a new OS from scratch would cost Nintendo a good deal of money.

The key to having Android is that it would give Nintendo access to a bazillion Android apps, so they wouldn't have to do a lot of work in making a feature rich phone (ie: have to go negotiate deals for Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, ESPN, CNN, etc. etc. etc. apps). So that saves a lot of headaches and leaves Nintendo to focus on the game-centric aspects of the phone.

"Google could perhaps help co-market the phone too as the first real gaming phone."

Not gonna happen with Google Play locked out. It would be an Android fork with a separate shop under Nintendo's control... like Amazon's Kindle Fire or Ouya, but even more closed. Google wouldn't promote that.

Perhaps. But yeah that is one thing I don't see Nintendo budging on. The shop would have to be under Nintendo's lock and key. I think Google could understand though, Nintendo is a game company, they need to control the gaming aspect of the device, and maybe see the value in Android getting the first real gaming phone making their OS even more diverse than Apple.

And I think Nintendo would be fine with non-gaming apps, so perhaps those could still be sold by Google.

Oh I agree it would be a great idea, that doesn't mean Nintendo would they. As we've seen they've made some awful mistakes recently.

I think their next batch of systems will be a home console with the 4DS or w/e as the controller, that is the idea floating around online. Also, going Android, do you think Nintendo would allow their games on other Android phones???

I just can't see them going toe to toe with Samsung, Sony ect in terms of classy decent phones. Not to degrade the Videogame industry, but phones is like playing with the big boys ...

Again though I don't think the idea really is to compete with Apple/Samsung. Those companies sell 30-50 million phones every three months.

I think Nintendo's goal would be to sell 2-3 million every three months. That would be considered Apple's breadcrumbs but it would mean a lot of extra money for Nintendo.

Not every cell phone manufacture is Apple or Samsung either, there's dozens of them, several of them are smaller than Nintendo.

Wouldn't be an android because that would mean Nintendo's software will go on Android and they won't do that. It will be a proprietary OS with it's own app market like 3DS/Wii/Wii U.
