Forums - Gaming - #1 in Launch Day Sales is a Meaningless Title

selling more than a million in a day is something to brag about. It's an achievement so why not? Sure it doesn't define what the future will bring to one console or electronic but to still to achieve something like that is a success in itself no matter how short lived it might be or might not be.

Why hold an event for graduating in HS? For getting a degree in College? For being 1st honor? Does that define your future? No. But it's an achievement and memory worth remembering and keeping. Same thing.

Because its a hollow achievement..  It was completely expected and any and every console before it has been capable of the exact same achievement.

I'm pissing on this specifically because Sony fans have been coming into my arguments quoting it as if it was the greatest proof ever that Sony has won this generation....  I mean are you serious...  I go to other threads and no ones even pointing this out...  It's ridiculous..  I face palm every time I read about this, and it KEEPS COMING UP...

If it was just one stupid fan who doesn't know what he's talking about and a small celebration then I would be fine with it.  However, Sony fanboys have taken to the streets and proclaimed Sony as the winner of this generation using this as its basis...  It's getting out of hand...

Technically true, but until we have a few minths under the belt and get an idea of how the gen will shape up, the initial launch sales are really all we have to talk about and speculate on. So thats what everyone is doing now. Kinda natural. After all the same happened with the wii and wii u.

If there was sufficient enough stock to sustain high sales then it would give the title some meaning I suppose, but at the moment it's kinda worthless (I'm talking about the PS4 in NA)

I have no issue with Sony and Microsoft touting their launch sales. Nintendo sure did let everyone know how well the Wii U did at launch. Consoles sell really well at launch. Even the Vita was hot for the better part of 5 - 6 months. Its also true that every console ever, even the DS and PS2, saw dips in their momentum at times, and the real test is how things, primarily new games, price drops, and remodels, effect sales. Both DS and PS2 had lost alot of steam but once the DS Lite and Slim PS2 came out, sales when through the freaking roof. This coupled with a ton of good games and cheaper prices on the older models. The 1st Wii was innovative and had the games, almost right away. 360 needed to add the Kinect, because the core gamer base is too small. PS3 needed a price drop, remodel, and games. My point is that I agree with it being a hollow number, due to alot of future unknown factors, but at the same time launches are built on hype and marketing, and they both did a great job.

Completely agree its phony baloney marketing spin.

Fastest sales =/= Biggest sales

I agree too. There is always a lot of hype around console launches.

Every main console launched since 2006 suffered after launch (except Wii), and some couldn´t recover from that yet, like WiiU and Vita.

The subsequent months of the launch are what really matters to see if a console will be sucessfull or not.

I just wanted to deflate that as an argument. I'm tired of hearing it, and I want others to shoot down those ridiculous threads themselves next time.

I agree except to me its subsequent years.  PS3 was the biggest failure of all time until the price drop, the remodel, and God of War/Uncharted came out.  The Vita is finished though.  All of its big titles came out and no one cared, and that is 100% Sonys fault.  The only franchise of theirs that is selling well on PS3 is Uncharted.  Killzone 3 was a flop, Resistance 3 was a massive flop, LBP2's sales were way down compared to the 1st one, yet they really thought anyone would want a portable console with those games as its base.   They are going to have the same problem on PS4 at some point too, they are very lucky that the 3rd parties are there supporting them.

3DS, Vita and WiiU didn't sell out, all performed terribly, 3DS got it sales up by massive price cut, Vita and WiiU are still failing. Launches seem to give a good idea of the future, especially if cannot even sell out on launch.

Wii U sold almost 3 million in its first month.    Launches are all about hype and marketing, but the following 6 - 7 years are about the games.  3DS was too expensive and had one of , maybe the worst, launch lineup in history.   Wii U had a solid launch lineup but the follow up was terrible.  Now that SM3DW is out, and Nintendo make the mario bundle, sales are doing much better.   It was only outsold by the new consoles last week by 110k and considering that the others are in the launch period, thats a whole lot better than I expected.   Vita is dead though.  It already has Uncharted,Call of Duty,Killzone,LBP, Hot Shots Golf,Resistance, and a bunch of other games, and no one cares.   If Wii U gets Mario Kart,Donkey Kong,Smash,Zelda,Metroid,Yoshi,Bayonetta, and X and its sales still suck then I will be the first one declaring it dead, but if the spike after SM3DW is any indication then the system still has a chance to be a success.

Well, having such demand and then being able to somewhat meet that demand--if one company was able to do it and others haven't, then why not give them some kudos.

But since it's Sony, I agree with the OP. It means nothing!
