Forums - Gaming - John Carmack: 360 and PS3 were 'far from tapped out'

Unlimited detail never panned out the way it did because those points weren't shown to be compatible with animation, physics, and other transformations unless you also put in some polygons but that would cost alot more processing power. The only purpose I see with unlimited detail is static environments otherwise it really doesn't have any purpose to be in games. What I'm more interested in is getting to see path tracing and fluid dynamics working together as that will get us nearer to the holy grail of awesome graphics and interaction.

Maybe in the next 10-20 years. :P
One things for sure, PC will have it first as that's where all the major innovation in graphics generally comes from. :)

That is the second most reason I stay on PC and abandom consoles altogether. The first and most importantly foremost reason is the FREEDOM I have on the platform.

And Wii U still has a loooooong way to go

I think there was more we could have gotten out of PS3/360 and MGSV will show this. The problem is that it would probably cost average studios way to much to reach the HD Twin's full potential. They could probably go Super Saiyan II if they were pushed hard enough.

But we had studios who could afford to sink massive amounts of time, money, manpower, resources, and some of the most talented developers in the world into pushing them, and did so. No other consoles in history have had as much invested in pushing their chipset as PS3 and 360.

Games like Beyond 2 souls, God of War Ascension, Halo 4, and The Last of Us squeezed them to their breaking point.

The Wii could run Crysis on max settings but nobody made the effort.

Side note: I don't know why people think The Last of Us looks good.  It doesn't, aside from character models.

It does show the PS3's age, but on a technical level its lighting and animation are very, very advanced for 2006 hardware. And it should be; one of the most technically talented devs on earth made it with 3 prior games' worth of experience with the hardware.

Point taken.  But I think Tomb Raider, Beyond Two Souls, and the upcoming Metal Gear looked fantastic.  I really think The Last of Us looks worse than God of War 3 and Uncharted 3.  Not a bad game but not a graphical powerhouse. Animation was great, though.

I thought the game looked absolutely fantastic, but just curious, what did you think was wrong with it?

John Carmack is "tapped out". Honestly, he talks so big but doesn't deliver anymore. IMO this guy is now irrelevant.

He is what? Please go and get to know about what he is currently working on before you post crap like this.

Yes the oculus rift looks pretty awesome but he's not the creator. Seriously, within the last 10 years he hasnt contributed anything special. He's been surpassed by many in graphics engineering.

Then tell me one person who actually has contributed something special? Carmack is an awesome coder in general, 3d especially. There is no way to deny that. Perhaps he made wrong decisions with Rage but still code is always mostly his own and especially good made (I read about a code analysis about Quake(?) where the author explicitely says how nice and well organized the whole code is).

Any dev-team out there would be happy to have a genius like him as a partner.

See, the thing is that I can't really tell you anyone who has contributed more in recent years. That's not to say that there aren't people. Its just that it really takes a lot to get recognized. Obviously there are genious people working at places such as Crytek, Naughty Dog, Santa Monica, etc... The games they make look amazing and that's because they have really talented people in those studios. People who I dare say are more advanced in 3D coding. John Carmack, although smart, is not at the forefront of graphics technology anymore. Other people are more worthy of the attention.

Well, I think you don't have the right to judge this because 1) you would have to know the techniques used in engines *and* you would have to be able to understand them and 2) ID releases games not *that* often. Rage is now an "old" game, we don't know how a new id-tech-engine would've been.

He may be a great developer, but so are others. And looking at what has been achieved on the HD Consoles by the end of the gen, calling it "far from tapped out" is not just a bit of a stretch.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

- George Orwell, ‘1984’

If you look at Rage, yes, he's right.

Game of the year 2017 so far:

4. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
3. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy

But not if you look at Beyond Two Souls, God of War Ascension, or Halo 4. ;)
