Well I guess I will have to eat my words a little bit. I just got Ryse today and I must say I'm pretty impressed by it. Chapter 3 in the forest is absolutely breathtaking. I would say this game looks better than Crysis 3 on PC, which I own. I don't have a PS4 so I can't compare Killzone but I'm sure it is up there with Ryse. This generation might have a few surprises after all. I can't wait to see Uncharted, The Order and Halo this year.

Well that was quick LOL.

Well I'm not blown away like I was when I first fired up my PC earlier this year, but I am impressed. I still stick to my original statement that while I do believe games will continue to look better as this gen moves along I don't think I'll be blown away by anything. I think we're at the point where games just look great. I don't see how games can look much better than Metro: Last Light, Crysis 3, Killzone, Ryse etc. I know they will look better but I can't imagine any leaps over these games. We're not quite at cutscene quality but pretty close and recreating realism will be impossible since it would take 10 years to make a game. This generation is going to be all about gameplay, I hope.

Then just keep upgrading your PC and you will see the difference once again. This generation sony and microsoft played it safe and went for a low to mid ranged build for consoles but PCs will dwarf consoles for many years to come. Just go look at star citizen on PC, that game looks amazing.

I may upgrade my PC in a few years but I'd rather sit on my couch and play with my friends on Xbox Live. I do 3D modeling and 2D graphics work on my PC so that is mostly the reason I even have one. Honestly the only thing that impresses me are some of the special effects in new movies, especially the Hobbit. That is some good work right there. Games are games. I think they are at the point where they will slowly progress but no more leaps.

You are underestimating PCs. WIth the PS4 and the X1 you will essentially have to live 10 years with it whereas on the PC as soon as a new process node becomes available for mass production, graphic card manufacturers like AMD and Nvidia will automatically see big performance boosts because of a smaller transistor size.

I'm not impressed either - and I'm talking about footage from high-end PCs.

I feel that jumping from PS2 -> HD gen was a huge leap, and then jumping from 360/PS3 -> PC was again another huge leap but at this point I feel that graphics have plateaued. While Witcher 3 & The Division are beautiful they don't look any better than Crysis 3 and some other PC games I have played. I feel that even a few years from now games aren't going to make another huge jump.

Yep, we are pretty clearly seeing diminishing returns in the graphics department.  I have seen quite a few people around these forums try to deny it*, but it is there.

*Maybe even in this thread, I only read the OP.

I was rarely_amazed by graphics ever - I was sometimes amazed by art direction (like with okami). If I was impressed by graphic it was more like: "Goddamn, that game had that bad graphic?!" rather than me actually being impressed by graphic.

You should try Eyefinity or 3D Eyefinity or 120/144hz Eyefinity.
Once you game at 3x-10x or more the resolution of consoles and having the game taking up all your vision including peripheral... You will find it hard to go back, it would be like trying to game on a mobile phone.

The main difference however that gives the PC it's massive advantage, is mods. - They can take a pretty average looking game like Skyrim, Oblivion or Grand Theft Auto and make the games look better than next-gen, whilst adding a plethora of new content.

The jump from PS3 and 360 to PS4 and Xbone are definitely not as grand as previous leaps.

bits - more bits - 3D models - SD - HD - more HD

The only thing that makes PS4 and Xbone different from their predecessors is the ability to create bigger games. This is something that only big time studios will be able to take advantage of, only a handful of games on the PS3 and Xbone pushed those system's limits.

Wow.

Need to upgrade that PC. Just starting with the resolution, one game runs barelly over 720p and the other goes well beyond full HD, if you have the rig for it of course. It's like saying you are so impressed with your 2002 hyundai because it is so close with to a Lambo x)

I won't even get started on everything else. But its nice to have an opinion. I also think to this day nothing looks better than Okami, Wind Waker and Shadow of Colossus, but that's me, I'm a huge blind fan of those games.

I would rather have seen the upgraded tech for consoles be put to more use in ridding us of the things that are annoying about gaming on a console: load times, frame rate instability, screen tearing, AI than use the power to make prettier graphics but still lump us with those same annoyances. But prettier graphics looks like what we'll mostly get. Ok we'll get 60fps games, but not rock solid 60fps. I'm fine with God of War III graphics it doesn't need to get better than that for games to be visually great as well as solidly made and great as games to boot.
