Forums - Gaming - Am I the only one not impressed by graphics anymore?

I bought my tv right before the 360 launched, so it's not 1080p capable. I'm not as excited about next gen graphics as I have been in the past. The improvements are there, but less noticeable. The jump to 3D polygons (Mario 64), the jump to 60fps (NFL2K) and the jump to HD (360/PS3) are the only real times I've been blown away.

Then again, maybe I'm just older and harder to impress. That being said, boobs are still as fantastic as ever.

no you are not the only one, i'm a pc gamer and graphics are not a wow factor several years ago.

I do and don't agree with you:

1) When my friend showed me COD2 and Halo 2 on his 360 in 2005 I said: "It doesn't really look much better to me at all." COD3 and Resistance were the first games to make me be amazed, and Killzone 2 is the ONLY time I have been absolutely floored by a games graphics.

2) Killzone 3 is IMO, better looking than any other game out now in 1080p (Even ties BF4 maxed out on PC). I have never seen better lighting and detail. The division is also breathtakingly better looking than absolutely anything on last gen.

3) I do find that I don't download graphics videos as often as I used to, or care as much about them for that matter. But I think this is because graphics are WAYYY ahead of the streaming tech that cannot even correctly show off last gen games, so I just know to not bother any more.

Overall I think this gen is as big a leap as last (For PS4, not for Xbox One), but it is Xbox -> 360 and not PS2 -> PS3. How much you appreciate the new graphics is gonna come down to the details:

-Do you notice in Killzone SF you can see entire reflections of people in the pools of water they walk over?

-Can you notice the individual threads of fibers in peoples clothing?

-Can you see the massive increase in draw distance, and your ability to actually distinguish between a bush and person from more than 50 feet away?

-Do you notice the amount of debris and little details everywhere? (Yesterday I zoomed in on a realistic looking butterfly in a forest in BF4).

I can notice these things, and they blow me away. But wait for Uncharted or Cyberpunk 2077 to be truly stunned by graphics...

Crysis 3 Ultra >>> Killzone Shadows Fall. I'm not going to be blown away by KZ. Now maybe Uncharted or Halo will but like I said I'm at the point where I think games have plateaued. I think PC has spoiled me. If I went straight from 360/PS3 to PS4/Xbox One then yeah I would probably be more impressed.

Look at my sig.   You are talking to someone who plays these games on PC maxed out.  Play shadowfall and tell me Crysis has better lighting.  Killzone doesn't beast the other games but it is very comparible and it is the only game where a few times in the campaign I swore it looked photo realistic.

Also let's not talk about Crysis 3.  It is a TERRIBLE game.  All crytek is capable of anymore is tech demos...

P.S.  I just watched the Snowdrop engine demo for the division.  How does the lighting and particle effects not impress you?

dude the last time I cared was on SNES. I thought graphics seriously couldn't get any better.

The jump from NES to SNES blew my mind.

A guy from G4 predicted being wowed by graphics would gradually stop happening when 360 and ps3 were new consoles. wish I could find that video. dudes was a prophet. I think it was the attack of the show host.

I'm still a graphics whore and my standards are becoming higher as time passes. Sure, I don't think visuals alone can save an awful game, but they can make a good one considerably better. I cringe now trying to go back and play some early- to mid-gen PS3 games.

I've never had a PC gaming rig so I haven't been exposed to the really high-end stuff, so consoles continue to please me :).

It's all about the game.

The last game to impress me with graphics was Unreal Tournament. Since then I've been pounding the table for better framerates and art direction.

MW2 was the last time I was impressed. now I got the xbox one with ghost. I hooked up my 360 to the port and opened ghost on both I did a slow walk around and panned between both displays and you could see it looks better on the one but it isn't amazing. I seen adam sessile freak out about NBA2k14 I downloaded the game and it's better than anything I have seen before but yet again it isn't amazing.

Ryse is supposed to be the console's current best showing of graphics but I'm not interested in the game enough to spend money on it. So It remains MW2, last time I was really "wow this is pretty"

Well not really as long as i keep in mind on what platform it is.

Naughty Dog Games are without any discussion the most impressive on consoles but would i compare them to a modded Skyrim,BF Ultra Settings and stuff on PC for example?
No - Graphics can still impressive as long as i remember im playing on consoles and compare it to other and older consoles.
DriveClub gets me excited cause it will be the first impressive Racing Game on consoles and so does Infamous Second Son look like a big step up.
For someone who is used PC Gaming Killzone won't be that impressive but it is a big jump on consoles.
The Naughty Dog Games and other things will blow everything away too.

I will again be impressed if a PS4 Game does graphics similar to a heavily modded Skyrim too even if i know that already for a long time now cause its a first for consoles.

PC games that use the hardware(and those are rare) will always be ahead
Its all about to what you compare Console Games.

Graphics haven't plateaued, you've just been sitting on the cutting edge for the past year. Prior to that, you had to wait 5-6 years to see a significant jump. But in the world of PC gaming, it's a very gradual climb.

I guess just stop playing games for a few years, then you'll see a jump? Or just realize that your perspective isn't based on a graphics plateau, it's the fact that you're sitting in a different position now.
