Forums - Gaming - Am I the only one not impressed by graphics anymore?

When 2005 rolled around and Xbox 360 and PS3 were starting to be talked about I was excited. I downloaded endless trailers of Motorstorm, Gears of War, Call of Duty, etc and was literally blown away. I moved from PS2 to Xbox 360 and day one the first time I popped in COD2 my jaw hit the floor. I was finally playing HD games on my new television.

I continued to be amazed by games such as Gears of War (first true next gen experience of those consoles imo), Gears of War 3, COD4:MW, MW2, Halo:Reach, Halo 4 andRDR. I also was blown away by God of War 3, Uncharted 2,3, Killzone2 & 3 after i purchased my PS3 a few years later. Starting in 2012 I was getting burnt out on last gen and got the itch to build a PC. I also needed a PC for my college major so it was a good excuse to spend some extra money so I could build a decent gaming rig. I finally built one earlier this year and I was blown away by BF3 Ultra settings, Absolute:Hitman, Sleeping Dogs and Tomb Raider. I literally couldn't believe what I was missing playing on consoles for so long. These cross gen games were so far ahead of consoles it was insane. Then I download Crysis 3 and contined to be blown away by what I was seeing.

Fast forward 8-9 months and I have seen direct feed videos of Witcher 3, The Division and direct feed screenshots of The Order:1886. Witcher 3 and Division footage is obviously PC and I'm just not feeling that same amazement I did almost a year ago when I jumped to PC. I have an Xbox One now and I didn't buy it for the graphics, but I bought it for Killer Instinct, Halo, Quantum Break, Black Tusk's new IP and being able to play Titanfall and BF4 with my friends. I will eventually get a PS4 but even on that platform I don't think Uncharted or future IPs will be able to blow my mind like PC did a year ago.

I feel that jumping from PS2 -> HD gen was a huge leap, and then jumping from 360/PS3 -> PC was again another huge leap but at this point I feel that graphics have plateaued. While Witcher 3 & The Division are beautiful they don't look any better than Crysis 3 and some other PC games I have played. I feel that even a few years from now games aren't going to make another huge jump.

It always has been more about gameplay than graphics but the jump in visual fidelity was fun in past gens.  I believe this gen and future gens that gameplay is more important than ever. If this gen becomes a battle of resolution and fps I'm going to be severely disappointed.

1.  You start getting used to it.  Coupled with diminishing returns = less impressed.

2.  You could be getting older.

Obviously gameplay is more important, but given the choice of the same game, where one has better graphics (i.e. the PS4 vs. XBone launch titles), I'll take the one with better graphics.

Playing Ryse on my 65" now.  Looks great, and sharp...  If that is what the Xbox can do, graphics will not be a problem for it whatsoever.

That being said, the game is a little mediocre so far. Repetitive.  Back to the original post, I think the graphics are great, but I am 31 now.  I don't do cartwheels for graphics anymore.  I find myself yearning for a Wii U + Mario 3D to be honest.  Pure fun it looks like...  Trying to find a deal on one.

That and I have Dead Rising 3 still waiting to open (trying to finish ryse first).  I know the graphics in that game will not be as good as ryse, not even close, but I bet you the game overall will be better.

Can't comment on PS4 games yet, as still need to snag one down the road.

Well graphics are cool but the eyes get used to them

This man nailed it

Before, the jump to 3D was the biggest thing. Also smoothening of polygons in sixth gen. And I downloaded endless trailers and videos towards the seventh gen. Since then nothing has amazed me. Killzone ps4 looks like new pc games to me though, really nice.

Yep.

All graphics mean these days is that we are one step closer to bankrupting the whole gaming industry... We aren't a huge audience, I'm sorry to say, and we can't afford 100 million dollar budgets for games... We just can't. If you want that then you have to start accepting things that will enlarge the gaming audience, and that means a system like the Wii U which is trying to appeal to it.

Sony and Microsoft are ticking time bombs waiting to blow up in our faces..

was the 3 extra pixels on the screen worth it?

And yet two people with no budget make something like this

4 people make this

This

Costs $35m including $25m for marketing

Yet this

Costs $84m

This is made by 80 people

where as this is made by 600+

yep

Frankly, the jump from PS3-4 hasn't been a huge leap.

And also, games like Shadow Fall and Ghosts don't look all that great to me. They look too realistic to wow me. I still think that stylised games like Silent Hill 3, Resident Evil REmake, and Shadow Of The Colossus look infinitely better.

i was at a friends house and watched him play his ps4 and i'll say this:

kz:sf on ps4 >> kz:sf on youtube >>>> kz:sf as a screenshot.

resolution on an HDTV is better than on a streaming website that probably captured the video wrong anyways. animation improvements are wtfbbq better and that doesn't come though on a static screenshot. i'm impressed so far and i expect the non-launch games to be far more impressive.

I've said it before and I'll say it again--youtube/screenshots make bad games look better and good games look worse.

Well, it's not 100% accurate.  Sometimes it makes you see detail that really isn't there.  Sometimes, it takes away detail that is there.  Either way, it never gives an accurate picture.  If you took some of the screenshots and youtube vids we used to use in graphics comparisons, you'd think the PS3 and Xbox 360 were pulling off PS4/Xbxo One styled graphics.

I have had the opposite reaction, I had no expectations and when I got the ps4 and the AC4 update came out for 1080p and I was very surprised and impressed. I look forward to Tomb Raider as well, very much worth a double dip in my opinion.

I don't know what to expect really, jump per generation is usually a big increase and to consider the fact the technology in last gen consoles is now 7-8 years old means new consoles would be so much better but developers are still constrained by what they can do currently. I recently played Remember Me and was amazed by the graphics, the lighting effects gave such a great atmosphere to the game and it felt so much farther ahead then early gen games, I think new gen will be this and more but within the space of a few months, not 6 years. I look forward to owning a new console next summer or just after.

Hmm, pie.

The jump in graphic quality is not so evident from the last generation to the current one.  What makes all those graphic whore talk only more and more silly.

I´m personally tired about all this shit. For me, art style make for better graphics than simple resolution.

Unfortunately, the industry is living a paradigm today that only games with realistic graphics, gore, violence and shooting shooting shooting are taken into consideration. No more puzzle games, challenging fantasy rpgs, music & rhythm games, adventures, platformers etc. Since games are becoming more and more similar in gameplay, people will only care about graphics.

It´s a shame because game are NOT primarly made by graphics. Gameplay comes first graphics after. The industry and the press think otherwise
