I wish we could have a black president here in Brazil, the racism here is still a big problem, and it is ridiculous in a latin country. I guess african people in high status positions is never a bad thing, there is so much to be done to wash away the wounds of slavery, it will take many, many centuries =/

Poor Obama can hardly do a thing with the Congress opposing him all the time.

He might have stirred up a bit more racism by sheer virtue of partisan alignment, as right-wingers who might have less reason to dislike blacks now have a better one, while less partisan persons grow used to seeing a black man in the highest office, so it evens out. For the average black, i doubt it makes much difference at all, as famous blacks can essentially "dodge" racism that still afflicts poor or even middle-class blacks, a la Sal's hypocritical son in the Spike Lee movie "Do the Right Thing," who liked Michael Jackson (pre-vitaligo) and Kareem Abdul-Jibar but was still prejudiced against their restaurant's black patrons, so Americans who might respect Obama will still look warily on their black neighbors.

A long way of saying "no change in the status quo."

How does him being elcted set black people back? Are lynchings a thing again? Is segregation making a comeback? Are black people not allowed to vote anymore?

Also: "Finally getting full equal treatment?" There's so many things wrong with that. That's not what happened. Black people didn't suddenly get respect because there's a black man in office. Black people are still discriminated against heavily since Obama got elected. Even amongst his peers, he is known as the "lazy president" "the foodstamp president" "a spearchucker" "shucking and jiving". There is a level of racism that goes into the criticism of the president. The people making these types of comments against Obama are the ones setting white people back 50 years.

"He did nothing right?" You cannot be serious with that. See how many things he accomplished in just his first 2 years, before the Tea Party movement. Also you claim "he does a horrible job" without looking at why. It's not just because he's a bad leader - he is constantly being opposed by the Republicans in congress and nothing gets done because of it.

He and his team greatly aided the economic recovery and right now, that's what matters the most.
In that regard, he did a great job.
But his obamacare thing (we need something like this for the future because our health care system in its current state is just not maintainable) was executed unpolished.

1. 20 tot 50 years back? There is a huge difference between 1963 and 1993.

2. In what sense did he set the country back to 1963? Or in which sense 1993?

3. What had changed from 1963 till now that has been reversed? Or what has been reversed since 1993?

Do you know how the state of the USA was regarding racial relations in that country in 1963?

Martin Luther King made his famous speech in 1963 and got murdered in 1968.

In 1964 after heavy pressure JFK signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that banned discrimination in public accommodations, employment, and labor unions.

From day one he was in for one of hardest presidencies in terms of getting anything done. The Republicans made it clear they would oppose by all and nay means possible to anything proposed that might make him look good. They saw Obama as a distinct threat that could cause Republicans to be out of power for the next decade or so. The whole 2010 election locked in safe seats and set us up for a more divided and extreme congress for least 10 years (the next census).

If the goal was to disillusion all the 2008 hope voters then yeah, the Republicans might have succeeded in lowering moral. If anything the past five years have set back democracy and public discourse and has left many victims in its wake, the greatest being the President.
